Alas, none of this has convinced me DA2 will be any better than I fear. Still doesn't look like a game I want to play.

I'd wager nothing will convince some people.

And some will always be as gullible as little kids who are waiting for Santa on Christmas day.

True indeed. I'm glad I firmly occupy the middle ground in such matters.

Not that  I think you care, but here goes: I'm not opposing DA2 on principle - my comment was exactly how I felt. What I saw in this video has still not convinced me DA2 is a game I want to play. It looks an awful lot like God of War now and I steer clear of those kinds of games for a reason. I just don't enjoy them. Of course, seeing a series I was really into suddenly becoming something I'm only half-way into (the lore, characters etc) is disheartening.

I know I'm repeating myself....

DA was never low fantasy, it was dark fantasy

Before DAO was out, did they not say DAO is not a high fantasy, thus would not have many kind of monsters like in Forgotten realms? Maybe I took it wrong then. Or maybe the dev team took a different turn.

Darkspawn? Magic? Demons? Elves? Dwarves?

Dragon Age is anything but low fantasy.

Faith will get you burned.

Well... One thing I didn't like (despite it's being the 360 version):
Image IPB

Isn't the red highlights a little too big? I mean they took half of the screen...
And there's a lot of free space in the top part of the screen. Well the sky sure is pretty, but if the action is the focus, I want to see the action.

I'm glad I'm a PC gamer and we will get a less "polluted" screen. I hope.

Again, what else is there to go on? I'm going by what I'm seeing. I know this is a console build and believe it or not - if the gameplay on the PC turns out to be more like say...World of WarCraft than Baldur's Gate then I could live with it. But BioWare still haven't given us a look at the PC version in action, hence my overwhelming sense of "meh" about most DA2 stuff I've seen.

THANK YOU

There is no reason to have the now  huge chunky portraits with the big ol' health/mana/stamina bars on the bottom of the screen where most of the action takes place. Seriously, its blocking whats going on.

I really hope they move the portraits back to the upper left where there is rarely anything going on and shrink the health bars so they're not taking up the whole screen.

The bottom of the screen will seem even more cluttered on the PC once you add in the hotbar.

It looks functionally very similar to the first Dragon Age on console. The only real differences are the character portraits and health. If it's just the animations you don't like, there's really nothing else to say--I very much doubt those are going to change at this point. You'll probably want to just stop following this game.

That is a little curious... any dev mind chiming in to tell us the thought process behind moving it down there? Is there, perhaps, another GUI feature that they needed in the upper right hand corner?

But this isn't even Gameplay! Not really, Likie I've been saying its immensely difficult to accurately judge the product from a couple minutes that isn't even representative of the actual experience for most of the game. But a wait and see attiude would be Logical and this is the Internet.

Okay I have to say I do agree with this despite generally loving the changes I could see. I'm not sure why the portraits were moved in the first place.

My thoughts:
======================
I'm hoping thats a placeholder character select screen or something done up just for the demo (probably)

Dear God, why is the two handed sword taller than Hawke? Really? What is this, Final Fantasy? I mean, really, that two hander is literally as tall as female Hawke. Is the weapon size exaggerated too?....*sigh*

The animations seem smoother

The darkspawn  look like spikey  S&M Chalkspawn except now they move like the Winged Monkeys from the Wizard of Oz or like the Putties from Power Rangers...not too threatening.

I seriously hate having the portraits with their giant health/mana/stamina bars shoved in the bottom left corner blocking your view of the combat. I hope thats a temporary UI....

I know its the exaggerated part but Hawke is swinging that massive sword like its nothing. I mean come on, its literally bigger than her and yet she is swinging it like a cheerleader twirling a baton! There is no sense of weight and heft to it. She might as well be swinging an imaginary sword.

The blood looks more liquid-y

I know its the exaggerated part, but Hawke moves waaaaaay too quickly in a very God of War type way with too much hopping and lightning fast sprinting....
================================================

I'm hoping this isn't indicative of the "real" gameplay speed. Hmmm... kind of underwhelmed.

I guess I should clarify my gameplay video request:

BioWare, release gameplay video from the "REAL" portion of DA2, not Varric's pipe dreams.

Can't say I'm all that impressed either. Looks essentially like a full on action rpg ala Torchlight or Diablo. Some of the animations do look better but seriously holy consolitus batman. Guess some of those fears weren't too far from the truth. Granted its a 360 build and not indicative of how the PC sku will play but SERIOUSLY underwhelmed. :(

Edit: Not a fan of the 2 hander being bigger than Hawke either, looks flat out ridiculous, if I wanted to play Final Fantasy I'd play Final Fantasy.

You mean upper left? The mini-map is up there on the right side.

Yw.

I was thinking... The party will have 4 members right... Imagine the screen with 4 of those things blocking the view.
I hope it gets smaller as you add party members.

Thanks for posting the link to the video OP.

I am not sure I like the shaky handy-cam style look to the combat. Sure it's popular in films (often overdone too) but I'm not sure I want to see that for ~30 hours of gameplay combat. I don't like the look of the weapons either, a little too much fantasy for my personal tastes. The armor looked pretty nice though, interesting look.

Hopefully more combat videos will come out soon so I can get a better feel for it. I'm not too crazy about it so far, the jagged rocks in the background are nice though!

I agree that the portraits with the health and mana/stamina bars* should be moved up to the top left, though I do like their new format. The health bars are probably just there for the demo, since they looks so tacky. On a positive note, the new map is rather well done and I'm suprised I didn't notice it when I watched the video... Twice.

*That's a mouthful.

Okay serious question: someone explain to me how this is any better?

That screen is just as cluttered with UI, if not moreso. Video is of DAO on the 360.

I'd actually really like it if DA took a cue from MMOs and let you move the UI elements around to your liking on the PC version. That'd be cool.

I wonder if the square portraits are placeholders? I really liked Origins' round portraits a lot more than DA2 ones. The more I look at these, the more generic they look.

Well, except for that, I don't have beef with anything else I saw today.

Well you could take into account that this is an isolated action scene from a purposefully exaggerrated part of the game on a console. If you think Bioware will skimp on the story then you obviously don't know Bioware.

Combat has been sped up but in DAO combat as a 2H warrior was pretty bad. I don't think I'll be missing dual wield on warriors.

I think it looks great. I'm not a big fan of the fast combat, but I'm sure it's just Varric being Varric and the real combat is much more involved and less button-mashy. Looks like it's got better graphics than DA:O already, even with half the textures missing ><. Fun to watch too.
