Why are we bathing in large drums anyway?

This is a good question, you should direct it to BioWare.

The best part of this controversy are the quotes that reveal their design philosophy to be "Well, you see, this system we made was horribly flawed and probably should have been tested more before we released the game. Therefore, this type of game system is bad (and not our development team, oh no!) and needs to be replaced wholesale with XXTREME Dynasty Warriors 2.0"

"Oh yeah, don't forget to include a World of Warcraft reference, because the kids these days love that game. No, I am not detached from reality at all."

That's pretty ridiculous. And I'm normally pretty demanding of the devs giving info. It's like saying "please take the time to vocalize what everyone is already aware of."

We can't call them on it if they won't first admit it.

That's not really true. "It should look awesome/impressie/etc" is always one of the purposes of art direction.

Stupidly oversized does not equal awesome.

Seriously, if they have metal that is both light enough and strong enough to accommodate those sword designs, then it should be evident in their architecture.

The setting all needs to make sense together.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's silly. Buster Swrod ftw.

I had to look up the Buster Sword to see what it was.  Good to see you reference one of the worst games I have ever played.

I'm not really sure why we have to have this exaggerated battle sequence in the first place, couldn't varric have just described in a clearly bombastic and fictional fashion and then have Cassandra call him out on it? I don't think these exaggerated scenarios are helping at all. One thing I have noticed though: the focus seems to be on Hawke. In origins it was about setting up an effective tactical offense to outmaneuver your opponent and win the fight, it was about working with your companions to achieve something you wouldn't have been able to do on your own, you couldn't just bum rush everything and win. I know this video is just an exaggeration but I'm just getting this Hawke-centered vibe from DA2 as a whole.

(Cautious optimism) : This is surely the "varric version". Bioware wouldn't turn DA2 into a JRPG.

(Doubtful questioning) : Right?

But you suggested they blew up at high levels. What was posted seems to suggest the blowing up is just exaggeration.

Perhaps the way you're reading it?

Gaider says -
The exaggerated element you're seeing at the beginning is going to
relate to the fact that the darkspawn are literally exploding left and
right, and that Hawke has access to high-level abilities she normally
wouldn't have (but which certainly exist in the game). It is over the
top-- which is why Cassandra calls Varric on it a moment later.

Translated -
In the exageratted version darkspawn are exploding because you have access to high level abilities.

Yes.

(Doubtful questioning) : Right?

The animations will be used for high-level abilities. But I doubt that it will by anywhere as gory outside of Varric's exaggerations. The speed and animations will likely be the same, though they may tweak the animation to make it more fluid and tweak the speed for balancing purposes.

For those of you who believe that the two handed swords are somehow too large there is an excellent thread over at My Armoury.com talking about the historical usage of Zwiehanders. (By excellent I mean well researched, and an excelent cure for insomnia)

As I understand it there were historical two handed swords of this size that weighed 5.5 to 8 lbs.
Read the third post down in the link for everything you wanted to know about Zwiehanders but were afraid to ask.

It makes sense within the game for two-handed swords to be that size because they are being used as AoE weapons. Two handers existed of that size in our own history, so it is by no means silly. It may not be to everyone's taste, but nothing is.

Historical usage aside,  and really why would it matter what was used in our history as we have little in common with Thedas (no dwarves, dragon bone or magic), I think they look cool.

Well done BioWare!

The sword she's wielding is far too big to move that quickly, the darkspawn move like the Ferenghi did in their introductory episode in STNG and like the orc at Minas Morgul, and all of that jumping around whilst wearing armor iz toetully rad 'n' leet 'n' *snurk hurr hurr* stuff!!!11!  Image IPB

I rate this load of nonsense a solid 8 on the dog poop meter.  One hopes that this nonsense will *not* be foisted on the PC gamers.

From what i see from that video dragon age series is ruined now im sorry..Now its like to have a sort of japanese slashing no sense blood explosion thing... The ammount of blood is ricidolus from what we see from this video its seems some hurlok explode under the lady Hawke blows -_-

The animation are not cool they are really really ridicolus.. I saw similiar animation on some japanese action console game.. Like devil may cry and other things likes that... I don't like the direction that dragon age taked...
Thanks bioware to give us first a nice old style rpg and calling it a spiritual successor of baldur's gate... And make it become a sort of manga with trash moves and exploding people...

Good grief - how many times does it need to be repeated that the gameplay was from the exaggerated portion of the game? You know, the part where VARRIC is describing how things went down. But yes, go ahead and judge the entire game based on less than two minutes of gameplay! Many people already seem predisposed to do so anyway.

No, it says that they explode to your left and right, that is a difference. Then it states that you also have access to high-level abilities.

They just want to try something else, which I respect.  If only the game weren't supposed to be over the top. You can still create a stylized god of war-ish feel without going the devil may cry route. I'm sure the story will be fine.

The Dragon Slayer isn't really a good example to cite, considering how it's portrayed to be impractially heavy to the point of being useless to most people and the protagonist's ability to wield it is an extraordinary feat.

There's also a thing called the legend of the hero of Ferrelden. I'm just hoping the story isn't entirely centered around Hawke's rise to power and the supporting characters play a large role in his tale, much like they did in origins.

I'm not making this up.  The justification they gave was that the weapons needed to be indentifiable even when the camera was fully zoomed out.

If that was true, and that reason has gone away, then either they have a new reason for large weapons, or they simply forgot to make them smaller.

How about "because it looks awesome." That is, in most cases, a good enough reason for a certain art direction in my eyes.

Swinging around a two hander larger than the player's character with the amount of effort it would take to swing a toothpick, is hardly awesome. More like ridiculous and comical looking.

They're adding cross-class combinations (like spell combinations in DAO, except you use the abilities of different classes to produce a unique effect), which would suggest otherwise.

Moving it quicly wouldn't be the problem -- historically a sword of that size is only 5 -8 pounds -- and that's not counting for different materials in Thedas red steel, dragon bone and the like.

Recovering your balance would be an issue, however Hawke is that awesome.

This doesn't change the absolutely horrible animations, derpspawn jumping around and looking about as stupid (hurdurf spikes!) as if this was a DW game, and the bland, bland environment. If this wasn't what they wanted people to see and associate with the game, then why would they show nothing but this for over two months? It is kind of cute that you think that all will be well in the morning, though.

I really hope the devs are taking a break from the forums today. These "concerns" over DA2 are getting repetitive and the conclusions being drawn from this footage is getting more extravagant.
