Besides the already mentioned guess of this possibly being one of Varric's exaggerations the other thing to consider is that this gameplay demo maybe 'work-in-progress', the game isn't out for another 6 months remember.

And on another note, that character select screen so sent me back to the KOTOR days.

She did at least cast one fireball. It is one of the fastest and smoothest spell casting I've ever seen in my gaming history.
It's also all she did.

Haha, good joke, now where's the real gameplay video? Guys? Guys...?
It seems people are satisfied with the moves. Really?

I'm hoping that was a console version we got a glimpse of.. 'cause I honestly cannot see that working on the PC version. Not to mention whoever was playing didn't even do us the favor of pausing for a moment.
And on another note, that character select screen so sent me back to the KOTOR days.
That was the console version. The UI is almost exactly the same as the console UI for the first game.

I like it though. It looks appropriately ridiculous for what it's supposed to be.

My thoughts:
======================
I'm hoping thats a placeholder character select screen or something done up just for the demo (probably)
Dear God, why is the two handed sword taller than Hawke? Really? What is this, Final Fantasy? I mean, really, that two hander is literally as tall as female Hawke. Is the weapon size exaggerated too?....*sigh*
The animations seem smoother
The darkspawn look like spikey S&M Chalkspawn except now they move like the Winged Monkeys from the Wizard of Oz or like the Putties from Power Rangers...not too threatening.
I seriously hate having the portraits with their giant health/mana/stamina bars shoved in the bottom left corner blocking your view of the combat. I hope thats a temporary UI....
I know its the exaggerated part but Hawke is swinging that massive sword like its nothing. I mean come on, its literally bigger than her and yet she is swinging it like a cheerleader twirling a baton! There is no sense of weight and heft to it. She might as well be swinging an imaginary sword.
The blood looks more liquid-y
I know its the exaggerated part, but Hawke moves waaaaaay too quickly in a very God of War type way with too much hopping and lightning fast sprinting....
================================================
I'm hoping this isn't indicative of the "real" gameplay speed. Hmmm... kind of underwhelmed.
I guess I should clarify my gameplay video request:
BioWare, release gameplay video from the "REAL" portion of DA2, not Varric's pipe dreams.

With regards the 2
Hander, it don't look that much different size wise than they did in
DAO. Even in DAO they could be just as tall as the female wardens (even
taller if an elf).

is that this gameplay demo maybe 'work-in-progress', the game isn't out

Very cool. I think I'm really going to
like this. I'm not really getting the 'sword too big' comments. I mean,
it is too big, but it's no different from the 2H swords in DA:O as far
as I can see.
What we neeeeed... are SMALLER!!! SWORDS!!!
*20% smaller to be exact.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that was the 360 version... but come on BioWare that "sword" is a damned flagpole! They were stupidly large in Origins and yet they thought they needed to make them even bigger? Its little over the top decisions like that which worry me about what other XTREME! design decisions might lurk beneath.slimgrin wrote...
I think this is what we are going to get in terms of gameplay. I don't like the giant sword either, and I'm assuming the character select screen and interface are either console versions or more likely placeholders.
Sure, some of the animations in Origins are pokey, but if that gameplay video is indicative of the overall speed of combat in DA2, it would seem that sort of entirely negates the point of pause and play. If you can breeze through the combat like a cheetah loaded on crack and red bulls, where is the strategy in that?slimgrin wrote...
But I'm impressed with the speed and movement. There simply is no reason to have battles take as long as they do in DAO. None whatsoever.
Again, its Varric's little fantasy, but you're probably right in that this is likely how being an upper level character in DA2 will be like, albeit simplified. Meh.
I don't know- I understand the need for accessability, but with ME2 as an example they "streamlined" the gameplay while effectively hiding the RPG mechanics completely. The RPG mechanics don't need to lurk anywhere- they should be obvious in the sense that you know how the combat is working and how the systems are working in the game.slimgrin wrote...
Clearly, there's hack n' slash influence that will turn some people off. If the rpg mechanics lurk beneath all this, I'm ok with it. But all the rpg goodness, the abilities and tactics, absolutely must be accessible to the player, not predetermined in any way by the computer. Really, this is my only concern for the game: streamlining.
I'm sure DA2 could make a good hack and slash, but there is more to an RPG than just the story- if I want just a story, I'll read a book or watch a movie.

To you perhaps. Don't mistake your reaction for that of others. Some people don't like over the top

This video reminded me a little of Balduers Gate: Dark Alliance. That is by no means a compliment in so far as "RPG gameplay" is concerned.JoePinasi1989 wrote...

Do you not think the way she swinged the sword is a bit too unrealistic and awkward? I recognise those swings from Fable 1. And the jump. The jump! That is just an outright cheesy ARPG move!svendigo wrote...

I get the feeling this may be the norm speed of the game the only difference being the difficulty of the enemies.

Very cheesy but we've known for some time they wanted to make the game more action oriented. I think the goal was to make the character feel like an epic fantasy figure.
