DA2 Gameplay from GameCity Vienna

I understand trying to widen the gap for your fanbase, guys, but you're alienating a bit of us as well.
So the story is good. Yeah, pretty much what I'd expect. Gameplay is fun. Is it fun? How will I know? These videos make it seem hack and slashy, which I can get from Darksiders. What new is there on the table?

A full party, pause-and-play, and a high tactical camera.CoS Sarah Jinstar wrote...
A simple solution would be to show off the PC version in regular gameplay (not varrick's wet dream) with a full party. I share your concerns though.
One of the problems with these videos, I think, is that they don't resemble at all the DAO we played because we played DAO very differently.
It's possible that any combat video that doesn't feature pausing will look fast to me. It's possible that any combat video that doesn't use a high camera at least some of the time will look chaotic to me.
There's a reason I use these features when I play, and those reasons are still there when I see gameplay videos.
I pull out the camera at the start of almost every battle as a sort of establishing shot. It gives me a quick look at the terrain and the disposition of enemy forces, and from there I can make decisions. I do often bring the camera back in for the actual fight because the lower camera (in DAO) had a much greater viewing distance (this is why I think the high camera should have been allowed to roam more).

I agree. That said, we can't just spit one out because of a leaked video. Whatever we put out still has to be something that does the trick without being slapped together-- no point in that, either.

Edit: As for exaggeration combat do you think there will be any ridiculous scenes? Like where the Darkspawn cower just from the appearance of Hawke's beard? I can see Varric saying something like this and then being interrupted.

Since when did people compare it to Dynasty Warriors?
Since they began associating fast combat with hack and slash? I dunno.
Really, combat doesn't have to be slow to be suitable for an RPG.
True.
But it also doesn't have to be over the topic to capture a feeling of epicness, does it?

Do you think you'll be able to polish up the "skating" look of the closing attacks? Like I said I have no quams at all with combat feeling more responsive, yet at the same time I would prolly hate the game if combat turned into some combination of DA + Ninja Gaiden. I suppose there's a fine line there somewhere.
I have the same concern as Sarah- maybe its just a nitpick, but the whole dash just seems like the Origins shuffle sped up. I mean, its looks like teleporting. I have no problem with the concept of a dash, it just doesn't look like its Hawke charging through the enemies, actually sprinting, but some sort of God of War/Devil May Cry/Ninja Gaiden combo move.
I guess thats my issue- the combat animations make it visually look like one of the hack and slash games I just mentioned, even if under the hood its pretty much still DAO. But the end result looks awkward to me as there doesn't seem to be much transition between the end of one combat attack and the start of the next, so it all seems very start and stop, herky jerky and not very fluid.
Edit:
JohnEpler wrote...
And I can certainly understand your concern! I myself am absolutely terrible at those heavily actiony games - I never even managed to beat the first boss in Devil May Cry 4, nor could I make it past the standard ninjas in Ninja Gaiden. The thing is, DA2 still feels like DA:O. It's a little faster, certainly, but when I got to play it recently, it felt like a more responsive DA:O with a few things tweaked.
Is everyone going to love it? No, of course not - the nature of any endeavour of this sort is that you'll have people who are happy with it and people who are unhappy with it. However, I would in no way compare it to DMC or similar.
Take that as you will - I'm a developer and undoubtedly biased! But I think a lot of your concerns, while valid, will be allayed.
I guess we all just have to take your guys' word until more in depth gameplay is released or we get to play it ourselves. Like I said above, its just that DA2 subjectively looks an awful lot like DMC or those sort of hack and slash action games even if the truth is it still plays like Origins. I mean you look around other forums on the net and see people commenting on the gameplay and for better or worse the one unifying theme is that the gameplay looks like a Dynasty Warriors/DMC style hack and slash, not Origins- and thats causing some people to go "WTF!?" and others to go "Huzzah!"
But thanks John- out of curiosity, do you play on the PC or console more? I'm mostly wondering about the PC gameplay if you haven't gathered that:wizard:

Bingo, I do the same thing, granted considering this is the 360 version its hard to judge how the PC version will differ. (god I hope it differ please please make it so) I would hope we still at least get some option of a tactical pull back in regards to camera options to survey the whole field, along with pause and play being still a viable option and have it not feel oddly paced due to the increased speeds.

Meh. I've seen threads full of outrage that drove it to 300 pages overnight. This isn't one of those. That said, there's a lot of Really Concerned People-- so some of us will come here on our own time and see what we can do to hold some hands and make soothing noises. Careful, champ. There's still months and months until release.
I know...That why I'm happy.
I can get Fallout New vegas this month and then wait till November for Assassin creed: Brotherhood then On my BirthMonth and Get Mass effect 2 and Wait till March.
Damn, I got it good.

Pushed to next year or whenever. Don't have a new release date yet for the PC version.

Really like the detail going into the armor design shown here, clasps, buckles, straps, pouches all a real improvement from DA:O for me.

Again liking the detail of the clothing and armor, hairstyles are good. Fem hawke looks a little too fresh faced while her sister looks...er...masculine.

I Don't like the blue splash wave coming off the attack, it might be a special move but I don't like these type of effects.

Another attack splash wave, I hope there's an option to turn these off.

As well as these large floating health bars.

Yeah thats what I was trying to get at, the Dash essentially to me looks like its just a sped up teleport and didn't look much better than what DAO is in regards to closing on an enemy, which gives it somewhat of a DMC/NG vibe to it. Not quite as fluid as I would like.

I missed those threads. But I saw plenty on how Dragon Age was so infinitely superior to any jrpg because it didn't have giant swords in them... Some of them are still there in the off-topic forum, not so many pages back.
