Dog is my must have companion everytime I play. His overwhelm is a total mage stopper and he is quck and can take out enemy archers as well. Dog can be a very effective companion. I do wish he could have come into awakenings though.

I must have missed that explanation in WH. What was it?
My Warden's a Grandpa! Or will be when he gets to Witch Hunt. I only played it so far with a new charater.

You speak blasphemy, good sir. Dog is awesome. He rips annoying mages apart for me
Yeah, my real dog died over the summer while I was gone, so I'm undergoing puppy withdrawl.

Mabari- (and maybe Ranger pets and such) actually speed up. Just something to gnaw on.

That may be, but I don't recall seeing any Mabari anywhere in Amaranthine or the surrounding area.
wasnt there a mabari in the basement of Vigils keep? Why couldn't you use the survival skill to heal it and then you could have another doggy? Not to replace the first, but to ease the pain of being so far away.

My Warden would not go anywhere without his faithful Mabari War Dog.

the reason is very thin because it is just a way to explain off the mabari. they did not want the mabari in the game. i could only assume he presented some kind of programming issue.
Maybe the Mabari Voice Actor wanted too big of a raise . . . .

You talking about the one that basically makes Dog a 'pet' for the warden so you can have him with you at all times? Yeah I got that one and it certainly makes playing DAOC alot nicer.FitScotGaymer wrote...

No, it wouldn't have been difficult to include him. Bioware dropped the ball with this one.FitScotGaymer wrote...
Okay it would have required a bit of extra writing for the Orlesian Warden but really would it have been so difficult to include him?
There could have been Priceless banter betweeen Dog and Ser-Pounce-a-Lot.

Try writing dialog for a Mabari. I'm actually doing it for a mod I'm working on and I'm finding that it's a royal pain; I haven't yet gotten to modifying existing dialogs in Origins to acknowledge the new Mabari companion, but so far I completely understand why he was "left out" of Awakening.

And what excuse would you give for Dog showing up when the Warden is Orlesian?Yrkoon wrote...

So... Your dog has lost its owner as you give the ultimate sacrifice... your partners are in pain and can barely stand to see it... however, acknowledging the heroic deeds of the dog, the royal house of Ferelden takes it in. The dog accompanies the king/queen to welcome the new warden, and takes a liking to him/her. The crown decides to demonstrate its support for your endevours by giving you dog as an ally.

Oghren decides to bring him along....
Or, Our Orlesian warden just finds a dog.
Or as mentioned above, when Alistair/Queen Anora visit the keep, they say: Hmm.... you seem to be in need of help. Here, this is the finest Mabari stud our Denerim Kennels have to offer.... Take him.

Why would the Warden give Dog to Oghren? The dwarf would probably get drunk and lose Dog in a poker match. Mabari don't run wild, "Just finding a dog" is not very good storytelling. And why would Alistair or Anora think that one Mabari would make much of a difference when you have the Keep's entire army and a handful of Wardens to help 'you'? Why would they just randomly give a much prized Mabari to an Orlesian Warden anyway? S/he could be a sociopath who enjoys kicking dogs for all they know

Why not? My Warden and Oghren were best friends. In fact, Oghren said he was going to name his son after my warden....Sabariel wrote...

Er... How do you think a Non-human noble finds Dog in Origins in the first place?Sabariel wrote...

First off, You do NOT have an army at that point in the game when the King/Queen meet up with you. You have nothing but your Seneshal. And both he and the King/queen remind you that you're going to have to rebuild both your forces and your Wardens.Sabariel wrote...

Second, I'm fairly certain that Alistair realizes more than anyone else that 1 Mabari makes a rather Potent party member and is of great assistance to any Gray Warden.

Dog is found at Ostagar by a non-HN. That's not Dog just being randomly found at the side of the road or running around the forest like a woodland creature. There is a tiny bit of story behind meeting Dog. It's not vast and deep, but it's still there.
But... you do have an army at that point. You update their armor for them and keep them happy by not executing the "deserter".And you already have a handful of Wardens: Oghren, Anders, and Mhairi (though at the time you don't know she's going to die, but you get three more Wardens shortly after). And though I like Dog and usually have him in my party, having a Mabari would not be considered THAT much of a help that Alinora would just bestow a prized Mabari on a stranger.
(...wonders if she's really actually debating this
