Don't say this isn't possible, for they did this to NWN it wouldn't be the first game to do it. I've seen plenty o' old games being restocked after they die. Just not in large numbers. Usually supported by some Red-Ant or whatever that sells a series of games made by differernt companys. (Ugh, hard to explain).

This is more of a wish then a suggestion however. I actually DON'T expect this to happen any time soon, but one can hope. I just want the community to grow.  Who else wish they'd do this?

It's to bad they can't seem to get the differences ironed out... if they had any brains they would have milked this old cow for all the cash she is worth. I really think they could have seen another ten years of coin easy it's a classic and they just don't die easy!

And why not selling it on the net, for even a nicer price and a largest rush of those dearly beloved noobs, to whom we are so proud to extend our vanishing NWN knowledge before we die and give any most unselfish advice they're willing to require from our greatest wisdom?
And I have no idea where are my original CDs anymore. Have you?

(I apologize before the new players, I so hate the word "noob" but my english is french sometimes... and I thought it was funny here. Chaotic but never evil. At least in RL.)

Just tonight I went searching for my NWN CDs... I found the boxes (with keycodes even) but no CDs. A friend mentioned he recently saw NWN Diamond in the "clearance" section of a Target, so I may hit my local Target up tomorrow and hope.

Astro, as long as you have a legally purchased license (the CD keys are in your little booklets) you can just borrow a friends disc and patch it to 1.69. 1.69 runs without a Play disc. You can probably download CD images too. It's completely legal as long as you own a license.

Atari has a remarkable talent for letting their greed screw up a good thing. They shut NWN down because they were afraid it would cut into NWN2 sales.

Short sighted twits. The way they bungled NWN2 is the stuff of legend. They could have developed and sold a dozen premium modules in the time it took them to release MoW. I'm sorry, but there's no nice word for stupid. Giving up that much revenue to slow down piracy for a few weeks was just stupid.

In the end, though, there's still money to be squeezed out of NWN and I wouldn't be surprised to see it released again someday. It's unlikely you'll ever see it in shops. Most likely it'll be a download. But I think we'll see it again someday. After all, Baldur's Gate is still going strong.

You do know that NWN is available to purchase online (physical delivery)?  Amazon, ebay, egghead are just a few that still sell it.

NWN doesn't seem to be too hard to get a hold of, at least not in the UK. I don't know who Sold Out Software are, but they seem to have NWN Deluxe (NWN, SoU and HotU on a single DVD) newly listed and in stock on Amazon, here. There are also new copies of the same version here.

But I do wish it was sold digitally. NWN Diamond currently has 975 votes in GOG's wanted list (search for Neverwinter Nights).

... and that's why, if Atari does finally settle the lingering legal issues, that it may be offered exclusively on places like Steam.  Nowadays, the only reason to market a physical on-line game product is to capture the single-player audience who want something to wrap up as a gift.  I have no doubt that downloads would easily dwarf the physical sales, well... at least they have the potential to.  So for re-releases of on-line games, the vendor would save all the packaging and distribution shipping costs and pocket the difference. PDF has replaced all the kewl maps and manuals so nothing missed there either.

For the player, not only are downloads available worldwide, but one never has to worry about a scratched disc:P 

But hold onto all those old CDs and DVDs, they will become collector's items and end up on eBay and Amazon!

With the release of the Baldur's Gate series on GOG (last week? It was very recently) and to a lesser extent GOG's release of Planescape:Torment today, whatever impediments there may have been for Atari to license out their D&D back catalog for digital distribution would appear to have been removed. The injunction that Hasbro wanted on Atari wasn't as draconian as people seemed to think, anyway, but now (and especially with the public teaser of Neverwinter Nights 3) I can't see how NWN 1 would be subject to some special case.

Assuming GOG or BeamDog (or somebody, anybody!) eventually pursues NWN 1 for DD, the only potential problem I can see (which might set it apart from Baldur's, for instance) is that since EA maintains the authorization servers their assistance might be required in generation of more valid keys for (essentially) NWN: Diamond packs. Not to mention if there is anyone still employed at BioWare who could generate new keys or facilitate that process.

Of course the flipside is a place like GOG does jump through those hurdles and offers the NWN "buffet" which would be Diamond + All the Premium Modules, etc.  That would be sweeeet.

Time will tell.

Just picked up NWN I Diamond Set  (all x-pacs + premiums) at Best Buy. Generally kept 2-3 in stock here in Madison, WI.

Planescape: Torment was just released at gog.com as well.

I would love to see this happen (though I just bought an extra copy of NWN Diamond to hedge my bets), and I would really love to see the premium modules made available.

And, it always seems to gamers like a downloadable release (or even a re-release of the DVD version)  would be an easy business decision: I.e. if the company has the rights to a game that's still pretty popular, then why not drop a few grand on an e-commerce server (and maybe a little advertising) and just let the money roll in? However, there is a bit more that a company must consider before this is becomes a serious possibility. Mostly that is due to support. Whenever a company is actively offering a piece of software, it has an obligation to offer technical support for some period of time. To people who have made it to these forums, it may not seem like such a big deal because there are nice stickies on resolving the common issues (graphics cards, Windows Vista/7, etc.) and friendly forumers who help out in hopes of seeing new players enjoying the game.

But most players (and software users in general) expect to install the game, maybe download a patch, and be good to go without experiencing any serious or annoying/recurring glitches. I think it's safe to say that a large fraction of people installing the game today must jump through a hoop or two to get it to run well. The average user will complain about things like running as admin or switching compatibility modes and they would scream bloody murder if things like Windows context-switching (using Alt-Tab to go to and from the game) were buggy (as it often is). There would be cries of "How could Atari release a game that they know doesn't run under a current OS?", "This is a ripoff because I had to download a 300 MB patch and the movies still won't play!", and so on. To a company that doesn't expect huge sales from a re-release anyway (and they would have to be hoping for something on the order of one hundred thousand downloads before this seems worth the effort), those issues and dealing with the fallout from them (adding staff to customer support, handling online refunds, and so forth) could easily put them off of this.

Anyway, once again, I would love to see NWN available in downloadable form, but I don't think it's as easy a call to make for the businesses involved as it is for us.

The first time I played NWN was like in 2007, the copy I own was given to me by my stepfather. I never got a chance to get diamond edition, which is why I'm hoping to get it off eBay. I still have the original Neverwinter Nights, and the disc is version 1.10. But there's only one patch you need to download regardless of the version your disc is: The 1.69 reboot patch. As for jumping through hoops to get it working? Well on Vista I had that trouble, but on Windows 7 it worked like a charm

I am just saying that whoever would re-release the software (on hard media or for download) has to be set up to deal with all manner of problems because buyers expect things to work without issues "out of the box" and that isn't always the case with NWN, as it was not initially designed for the current OSes. Because of that, there is a staffing and support commitment that the company must make and that may be a deterrent to re-release.



BTW, I have had some luck getting NWN Diamond from Best Buy. Some stores have it and some don't, but they are worth checking if there is one (or several) located near you.
