I was just trying to kill the high dragon at lvl 15 on hard (dw warrior warden, leliana archer, sten with Yusaris tanking, and Wynne) and i wiped because the dragon did a double grab! At about 40% she did a grab on me and i lived (only just), and then a grab on sten with litterally no delay as soon as i had been dropped. I had just wasted all my healing spells on the warden, making the second grab impossible to avoid.

Wtf   bug? or just wrong strategy?

That was my third go at killing her, and i just cant get it right. There seems to be a bug with sten and grabbing. Previously i was trying to tank with my Dw warrior (with juggernaut and points into constitution) but sten would always be grabbed at odd times.
eg; after beating on me for ages, she would randomly grab sten in preference to the warden.
Im confused, why does the dragon grab sten so much? Has anyone else had this problem?

I never tried bringing Sten and I have never, ever seen the High Dragon double-grab. Maybe I've just been lucky.

Will be fighting her soon again with Sten in my party.

Probably the same reason why dragons find Alistair to be tasty as well.

Dragons can't grab Shale though. So I have had the easiest time against them with Shale taunting and doing everything she can to keep aggro.

As a rule of thumb, the mili-second a dragon or Ogre grabs one of your party members, you should have your mage cast Cone of Cold.

Or Force Field.

Cone of Cold doesn't always connect on the tougher enemies.

Dog cannot be eaten either, but the pup has a limited item set.

If you stay to the rear flanks of the drake, you may avoid the Grab.

Cone of cold is very reliable against the high dragon for dropping grabs. I actually have had dirty fighting work on my rogue too. Never really tried pommel strike....

I don't like force fielding my tank because it feels kind of like cheating....

Double grab can happen it's not a bug, happened to me, both times on Alistair, poor guy.. :D Just do the Cone of Cold or mass heal him with Wynne, you'll be fine.

I wonder if Dog's "Charge" or "Overwhelm" would work on HD's grab . . .

Scattershot works nicely as well.

I usually have Alistair or my warden tanking the dragons and I have no issues. Sten is usually fighting from range with arrows too, on auto attack mode because I don't want to drop him for one fight.

I usually go conservative to make sure that Leliana has the stamina to use scattershot when needed and that my healing mage has the mana to keep the tank at near full health at all times, to avoid the close calls.

For some reason the dragons prefer Leliana in my games.
I can see that. She's a tasty little snack.
Cone of cold, I don't know if stone fist works too? Or the prison spell?

Usually, before I call the dragon, I'll have everyone hold their position with ranged weapons equipped, and then have the tank call the dragon, run up and taunt, and then let the rest of the group move freely. As long as the tank keeps taunting, the dragon should be glued to them, and if the dragon is facing away from the rest of the party, only the tank should be getting hit with the fire attacks.

I haven't noticed crushing prison lasting long at all or being much use in this situation. Usually if I want to free someone from a grab, it has to be scattershot/shield bash/cone of cold/force field, and etc. I'm sure petrify should work, though I usually skip that spell.

You can also Force Field the enemy. Lasts almost no time on tough enemies, but it forces them out of a grab. That's what I normally do if a DPSer gets caught by grab.

Well, they're both wonderful spells for the situation. I only cite Cone of cold because it's bugged, and never fails to freeze the enemy who's grabbed on to one of your party members.

Plus it does good damage.

Yep I'm just listing alternatives. Cone of Cold is a great spell, with a very low cooldown.

I like to have both. Winter's Grasp is also awesome and you get it on the way to CoC.

Leliana's Below the Belt should be able to work, *especially* on male dragons, but alas, it does not . . .

Does cone of cold always hit grabbed people along with the dragon, or does my aim just suck?

Though it was pretty funny when the Dragon got unfrozen first, leaving my Warden floating in mid air, no doubt contemplating what possessed her to blow that horn.

Grabs great fun, I have some good screenshots of being tossed around by dragons.

Nastiest was the ghost dragon in awakenings - it threw my character outside the walled area during the fight, and I couldn't get back in.
