So I am out looking for a new PW to join. Basically what I am looking for is something within the Forgotten Realms or similar D&D setting. I don't have problems with realms that mirror historical periods, or worlds modeled after famous writers, but what I am really looking for is someplace familiar. I love the BG and IWD series and ToEE etc... and was a Greyhawk player back in the day so that is what I want now. I just like the whole Wizards and Orcs and Elves and Dragons dynamic and would feel most comfortable in that setting.
Something that is mid to high RP, basically 90% or more of what is said or done is IC, and you are rewarded for playing such. I am not a "Build" PvPer, so there doesn't have to be a heavy focus on that, although if there is, that is fine too. And there should be loads of quests to participate in. Mostly I would like some place where you aren't relegated to grinding through hoards just to level. If there are reasons for the mass slaughter, fine! But I get really sick of having to hunt and kill endless ad nausium low level mobs (rats, wolves, bandits, skels etc...) just to get to 5th level. A rogue should be able to do "Rogue" like stuff. And a scholarly wizard should be able to research and study and learn and all gain exp.
I would hope to find a Mid level magic world. I don't need +35 weapons with god like abilities. But neither do I want that hard won first +1 weapon at 10th level. Somewhere in the low to mid range would be nice. Also the ability to enchant wands and items a bonus. Optimially I would like a world that allows advancement to level 30 but is mainly focused on levels 5-20. I don't want to spend hours and hours and HOURS getting to 5th level. However, I also would like a sense of accomplishment becoming Epic (hence the name).
Also, some place that doesn't penalize those who have lives outside the game world. Basically, sometimes I like getting on and losing an afternoon with a group of people exploring the unknown. But I also sometimes just want to get on and seak my fortune by myself. So a little bit of both in terms of areas to explore/quests to complete etc...
Finally, some place that isn't like all of the MMOs that are out there. Give quests that can advance the story for the player. I might be asking for a lot, but I would like something of the feel of the Single player style game in that you have quests to complete that open new things to see and do. Not just "Grind through this area until you are tough enough to get to the next area". That is just booring (to me).
A long grocery list, I know. But does such a beast exist?
Looking for PW - with lots of RP

You're welcome to try Sea of Dragons. It meets some (but not all) of your criteria. To go point by point...
1. It's set in the Forgotten Realms on the southern portion of the Moonsea. Anyone who's familiar with the Moonsea and the Mysteries of the Moonsea campaign settings would most likely feel somewhat familiar with the area.
2. The server is high RP, though it doesn't force applications. Most of our players are very good about staying in character.
3. PvP is permitted, but it's certainly not a focus. RP is, and sometimes that leads to PvP, however.
4. We have about 13 - 15 quests that vary in nature. We try to make them have options for all types of characters. There are FedEx quests, of course, but we try not to do too many of those. Unfortunately, it takes awhile to write and script quests that are more complex, so they do not come as fast as we would like them to.
5. SoD is set up to encourage adventuring, but not grinding. A decent challenge monster should net a decent amount of XP, and beating something really challenging should be very rewarding. It doesn't necessarily mean that leveling is fast, however, as the server is not set up with massive amounts of spawns popping up everywhere. Also, party play is encouraged (though not necessary).
6. Rogues are a bit lacking in things to do that are "rogue-like" at the moment, though we certainly have intentions to correct that in the future. They can still be highly useful in DM plots that are being run often by our active (though small) DM team.
7. In regards to studying to gain XP for wizards, RP XP is not something built into the server at the time. RP rewards are given out by DMs here and there, but it's probably not quite what you're looking for.
8. The server uses the DMG guidelines for magic items. You won't find uber gear. You can obtain +1 gear at an early level. You cannot find much better at the time (though +2 exists) as the server is (currently) soft-capped at a lower level.
9. Enchanting wands and the like would be something that would likely be included in the custom crafting system that we are planning on having. Lack of available staff time is slowing that down, unfortunately.
10. Anyone could potentially get up to level 30, but I doubt that it would happen. The server is focusing on levels 5 - 15 (hence it's easy to get to 5). By narrowing the focus of levels we can better implement content instead of having to spread it out piecemeal for all thirty levels.
11. I'm not sure what you would mean by penalizing. If you mean not falling behind to far because you don't have time that others do to spend playing, that is an issue no matter the server.. Anyone who spends more time online will almost always have a higher level than those who don't. If, however, you mean being penalized for just wanting to explore on your own, we're certainly not going to do that. Exploration is encouraged. Just be aware that places are going to be that much tougher without nearby help.
12. I can guarantee that SoD is not like an MMO.
SoD is a fairly young server (less than a year running) with a small staff, so it's not built at breakneck speed and we can't implement a lot of what we'd like to do instantly. If you're willing to play on a server that is still growing and has a nice player base that is growing pretty quickly, come check us out. I think you'd enjoy it.
