Have had this happen also due to a windows update.

Try This;

Do a Restore to the point where the MS update was being installed, once it is finished go to Windows Update and reapply it. Seems to be an issue with the "Forced" update and restart.

Game worked fine for me then. Hope this SUGESTION helps you.

Ok: First what version of Windows are you running ( 64 or 32bit ) and next:

Navigate to your Dragon Age install dircectory/ bin_ship

In this directory you should have a file named EACore_App.ini

Post the contents here.

Also, do you have a EACoreServer.exe in that directory>?

CommandPortal_Port_Range=1000
ServerIdleAutoShutdown_ms=20000

UseStandAloneServer=true
SharedServerId=DragonAge
core.agents.0.id=AGENT_ACCESS
core.agents.0.path="C:\\Program Files\\Electronic Arts\\activation\\activation.exe" /locale={locale} /patchLocale={patchLocale} /gameName="{data5}" /corePort={CPPort}
core.agents.0.supportedtasks=TASK_GET_LICENSE_USER
core.agents.1.id=AGENT_ACCESS2
core.agents.1.path="C:\\Program Files\\Electronic Arts\\activation\\activation.exe" /locale={locale} /patchLocale={patchLocale} /gameName="{data5}" /corePort={CPPort}

Ok, before I ask you more questions: BACKUP the EACore_apps.ini

Then delete the entire contents of the file, save then try to play the game. If it works then great, if not then answer me this :)

Are those paths correct in the file? (ie if you navigate to those directories are the linked files there?)

What Version of Windows are you running? ( 64 or 32bit )

I'm having the same problem and am kind of computer illiterate so I really need someone to walk me through this, didn't attempt the above solutions because I don't really know how to :-(. I'd really like to not have to reinstall it and lose all my progress, but if that's the only way to get it working again I guess I'll do so. I'm running 64-bit vista and I downloaded the game from Gamestop, don't know if that helps at all. Someone please help me!

I had the same problem with my GamersGate install.

What finally worked was to install the EA Download Manager. Registered using that.

At some point I shut that down. Not sure if that mattered. It may have had the EACore_apps.ini open so may have been required for the next step anyway.

Then I had to wipe the EACore_apps.ini file clean (backed it up first.)

Then I ran EA Download Manager and ran the game from there. No more error. So far.

The rewritten EACore_apps.ini is much shorter:

[EACore]

LogId=Temp1204

base_cache_dir=

[EACoreSession]

full_base_cache_dir=C:\\Documents and Settings\\Owner\\Local Settings\\Application Data\\EA Core\\cache\\Temp13FC\\

It looked like the one above a bit before I wiped it clean. Suspect the registration process from the online download versions isn't creating a proper file.

Thanks again to Dateranoth! After two rounds of uninstallation/reinstallation and two days of back and forth with EA "support" (useless so far), I found your post -- and fixed the problem in 60 seconds. Going to write back to EA support and recommend that maybe they follow the forum...y'know...so they'll actually be able to help people? ;-)

I have the same problem. It seems I don't have the file activation.exe at all on my computer (C:\\\\Program Files\\\\Electronic Arts\\\\activation\\\\activation.exe). Can somebody email it to me?

Yeah! THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Wiping the EACore_App.ini file didn't work the first time...

But after the THIRD reinstall, and update to the 1.03 patch, wiping the *.ini file worked perfectly.

Thanks thanks thanks!

FYI, I started getting this awc.dll file error after updating my version of the DA:O to the 1.03 patch,

Game from EA Download Manager, and all the other EADM fixes and the like didn't work.

Now I'm off to go play. :)

I had this problem, game tries to start now after applying your fix, but then says it can't detect supported video card! It's worked fine since last august, i had a forced windows update and restarts then it won't work.

You had more than one problem.  To start with, there was no Dragon Age to play in August of 2009.

Your system may need a cleanup from an adware infection; anyway, something corrupted Windows' files, and that included files the game needs.  In order to play the game's graphics, there are four elements working together.  The video card drivers are the bottom layer, on which Direct3D and PhysX are sitting.  The game runs on top of those three (note that it's supposed to be the CPU-based PhysX, which is totally independent of nVIDIA's video drivers).

To find out which one is damaged, start with the easiest to change, the drivers, and update them a notch newer, then retest.  If that's not it, get the latest Dx9 and install that (makes no difference if your OS has Dx10 or Dx11 as its own default Direct3D).  Retest.  If it still fails, install PhysX.  Retest.  Last, reinstall the game.

This happened to me immediately after installing the 1.04 patch. The fix of wiping the EACore_App.ini file worked, but I find it very odd that the game would crash so badly right after installing an official patch.

I have the same problem after installing the 1.04 patch., but i find how to solve it. Navigate to your Dragon Age install dircectory/ bin_ship.

In this directory you should have a file named EACoreServer.exe. Launch it manually, and then launch the game.
