I just opened device manager and clicked on "computer" and it says: ACPI Multiprocessor PC.
Does that mean that i have multi processors or is it just the Hyper Threading?

AFAIK, the only single core processors that ended up being addressed were actually the early Cores, and the single core AMDs had been working relatively well even without anything special in any patch . .  I'd have to review the patch notes for each, 1.01 and 1.02, to refresh that recollection.

I think what I needed to have said was along the lines that there hadn't been a lot of interest in doing anything for the old stuff.  I thought that the developer comment about the matter had sounded reluctant.

So you don't think they'll come out with another patch for the old stuff anytime soon?

Confirm that your system meets or exceeds the published minimum system specifications:
Operating system: windows 7 home premium 64-bit
CPU: intel core i7 processor 860
RAM: 6,00 GB
Video card: Nvidia Geforce GT 220
Audio: Realtek High Definition Audio
DirectX: DirectX 11

Provide detailed information about your PC system
1. What version of the game are you playing: physical disc or digital download (along with which vendor)?
Physical disc.
      Configuration Utility | Game Tab
          Version Information:
            MassEffect2.exe V1.02
            MassEffect2Launcher.exe V1.01
            MassEffect2Config.exe V1.03
            Uninstall Mass Effect 2.exe V1.03
2. System Details
      Configuration Utility | Summary Tab
            Processor: Intel® Core™ i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80 GHz
            Clock speed: 2791 Mhz
            Physical Memory: 5,99 GB
Display adapter: NVIDIA Geforce GT 220
            VRAM: 1.00 GB
            Driver version: (empty)
Sound adapter: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
            Driver version: 6.0.1.5874

Operating System (and service pack, if applicable) : Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (6.1.7600)
DirectX Version: Direct X 10.0 (Mar2009) or later

Details about your problem.
1. What is the nature of the problem you are seeing?
It works fine until a short time in-game. Then the monitor goes off, the system becomes unresponsive and I have to cut the power. (Then when I restart the computer windows starts in fault repair.) I think it has something to do with the driver since the driver version in the configuration utility remains blank.
I have updated the graphics driver to version 258.96.
2. When did the problem start occurring?
After I downloaded Lair of the Shadowbroker. (I was going for the hard way achievement, but now they have been reset.)
3. Where does your problem occur?
Anywhere in-game. Loaded game or new game doesn't seem to matter.
4. What are the steps in replicating the problem?
Play the game, then after about 3 to 15 minutes it happens.
5. Have you modified your game in any way?
    No.

yep! same deal with mine! My monitor looses signal and computer becomes unresponsive. Your probably right, It must be a driver bug because the video signal gets lost.

I managed to find a solution to my problem.
Apparently the black screen crash is related to gpu overheating issues.
That is why the video shuts off, its a safety mechanism.
I have an Nvidia 8600GT factory overclocked to 576 megahertz.
What i did was downloaded the Nvidia performance plug-in for the Nvidia control panel which gives me the option to underclock my gpu.
I underclocked it from 576 down to 500 megahertz. Now I have an extra 19% cooling. I've been playing for over 7 hours straight without any crash of any kind. I have graphics at max and a consistant 30-40 fps
(used to be higher before the underclock).
Ill keep this thread updated if I get any more related crashes.
Its still possible I've just had a lucky 7 hour streak...

I have tried zach's solution, unfortunately it doesn't work for me.
If anyone wants to try that solution here is the link.
