Never stopped Samus Aran from selling games since the mid-80s

The difference being there wasn't a male alternative in her game, and one that was already getting all the media exposure to kick things off.

Now combine this with the fact that most gamers are male, your female ad would be a waste of resources for the income it would provide

yes but its not the same. First of all, a lot of people dont even know its a woman(im serious) and second of all that was in the mid 80's not today. Back then people would go for what they could get and since there was no male alternative, she was a popular character, because of that  has transfered over wonderfully to the modern day. If she was created in the modern day, many people wouldnt give her ago thus she wouldnt have as wide of a appeal

I had to laugh when I saw this thread title, because I was trying to convince my father to play Mass Effect, and he asked me, "Why do you even play that? You can't be a female, right?" He didn't even know that it was possible to play a femShep, because every single box/poster art that you see has only maleShep.

Simply put, it won't happen. Sheploo has been the ME mascot since ME1, they will not suddenly change that for a pissed minority.

Sorry girls, the best you'll see will probably be gameplay trailers with femshep.

A study by Electronic Entertainment Design and Research, covering five years of commercial game releases, show that the sex of a game's protagonist doesn't visibly affect sales whatsoever.
Also, games with female leads tend to achieve a higher average score in reviews, and about 51% of the games released during these past five years allow the player to assume the role of a female character.

If I were an optimistic sort, I'd say that this "boy's room" perception of the form is slowly dying.
Good riddance.

P.S
And I thought it was established by now that the 'stats' published by IGN were completely devoid of meaning, seeing as there was no context or contrasting figures with which to make valid comparisons of data.

The ME3 box-art should just include a composite CGI-quality image of the two default Shepards, male and female. Possibly with a dual-service tagline like "Change the face of the galaxy!" or something, with some smaller text explaining that the protagonist can be configured.

I didn't know Samus was a woman until I played Super Smash Bros.

One great thing about female Shepard is that she is not another female protagonist in a video game who's there primarily because of her looks as a selling factor (even though it is of course possible to create very beautiful female Shepards). Female Shepard is a strong and independent woman who shows that women can save the universe just as well as the typical male action hero. I like that, and I hope and anticipate that she will continue to be treated equally in-game. As long as that is the case, they can use a male Shepard for their PR for all I care.
