I think by far tank, mostly since he doesnt really need gear

this frees you up for using other plate sets on other characters

His abilities are also mostly passive and this means he can tank very well without being heavy on scripts in the tactics and behavior

Huh...didn't realize Shale could do ranged attacks. Then again, I never put Shale in my party to begin with. Stats point to tank, however. When I recruited Shale, I was level 17 or so, so there were a bunch of points wasted into constitution. Which kinda made me not want to try Shale out. I'll have to recruit Shale earlier next time so I have some sort of control on where the stat points go.

i let shale be my main tank, cuz allister was pretty bad at holding agro, plus shale is a BEAST when i finally found some flawless crystals.

I've read Shale makes an awesome tank, I'll probably use it next playthru but my MC was a tank this time around. Multiple taunts, AoE CC/dmg, great sustained abilities and socketable crystals that greatly increase Stamina regain make it a natural tank.

I don't know, Shale seemed like a terrible tank for me.

No armor means you don't have to gear him, but it means he's just as squishy no matter how much loot you get, really. You can't give him huge sets of armor to keep him alive, you just have to give him a big health pool and hope you can fill it faster than it drains.

Personally I preferred a warrior tank, but that's simply me.

Shale isn't squishy, Shale has a buttload of HP and gains defensive boost if desired. A very capable Tank.

Shale can wear 'armor' - her crystals are pretty decent, especially the Brilliant ones. She only gets about 20 or so armor before her abilities come into play, but she's still a beast of a tank.

Stoneheart sounds like it makes up for not wearing actual armor.  My PC is a tank so I haven't used him, but my brother is tanking with him and from what I've been seeing, he seems really good at it.

I thought Stoneheart just gave a bonus to defense, not armor.

Personally I prefer armor to defense, since I have more trouble with single, tough enemies than packs of smaller fodder, but I guess if he gets a significant boost, it'll even out a bit.

Shale is an awesome tank. Even in Juggernaut armor, Allistair didn't seem capable of holding nearly as much aggro or taking nearly as much damage as Shale could. Maybe I didn't build Allistair right for tanking, so it could be my fault rather than his. Regardless, I used Shale as my tank for the majority of the game and she was unstoppable.

In my next game I might be the tank and let Shale dps to see how she performs there.

yeah with stonehart and the brilliant/flawless ice crystals, shale is amazing

you just split your points between str/con with a few in dex

shale will be able to tank multiple mobs + boss without minimal healing

Stoneheart, once maxed out with passives, gives a pretty significant Armor boost, +12 from 13 to 25. You can increase this more with Crystals, but I prefer the +stat and +regen crystals. The biggest difference imo is that while you can get more Armor with Massive, Shale has very little fatigue so you can essentially spam abilities far longer.

I found him to be a very decent melee DPS. He's the only melee DPS who can offer sustained melee splash damage, and not just an activated ability to hurt a group of foes once.

As for tanking? He isn't the best choice. Although he can have huge amounts of health, without a shield he is not as capable at mitigating the damage and will become taxing on the healer eventually.

Shale is balanced really well for all her "modes". I never used the stat-boosting one, but there were times when I switched between all three. The ranged one is great for taking out other archers from a distance without getting swarmed, since it boosts others ranged as well and she has nice AoE ranged skills. Stoneheart is great for tanking, especially against revenants and dragons, and Pulverizing Blows I found great for individual encounters and swarms of little things too. Deep Stalkers especially are good to quake, and ogres are good to punch and knock back.

Shale's great all around, but I think I used tank most.
