Version Information:
       Patched to 1.03
       Later updated through the Securom updater.
      
System:
      CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 (3.2GHz)
      Memory: 3GB
      Video:   ATI Radeon 4650 1GB (Catalyst 10.9)
      Audio: Creative SB XFi Titanium (Driver v6.00.0001.1348)
      OS: Windows 7 Home Premium Retail (32 bit, SP1 installed)
      DirectX: dxdiag reports DirectX11, ME2 config reports DirectX10 (Mar2009) or later

Compatibility Options:
      WindowsXP (SP2), run as admin

When running from the launcher with no compatibility options, the game refuses to run.  Instead the securom protection just complains about the presence of disc emulation software (there aren't any on the computer).

When running from the launcher with compatibility set to XP (SP2, or SP3), and running as administrator, the launcher runs, and I get the lucasArts splash video.   Then KOTOR will minimize to task bar and just sit there.  Clicking on it and attempting to switch to it won't do anything.  

Upon using the securom diagnostic program to update it, it now crashes to a black screen instead of minimizing to the task bar..

When running from the launcer with compatibility set to WIndows98, and running as administrator, the launcher runs, and the lucasArts splash video completes.   Then it crashes to a black screen, with the custom purple KOTOR pointer (so it's getting further).   Did the same thing before the securom update.

Running from a shortcut that points to the swkotor.exe file gives the same rsults, except that the LucasArts splash video is skipped, and the launcher options don't appear.

I even tried swapping out the miles sound system dll (mss.dll) as was suggested for vista compatibility.   No change.

Not sure what else I can try.  Thanks for any suggestions.

Ok then, can anyone confirm whether or not KOTOR1 or KOTOR2 from Steam works on Windows7.

The listing says the steam version works on Windows Vista, but as I found out, that doesn't mean much for Win7 -- at least not for this game. KOTOR1 retail does work on Windows Vista once all the patches and the securom update is done. I just can't get it to work under Windows7.

Anyways, does the Steam version work any better?

I haven't heard that the Steam versions work any better, and I too was hoping it woulld be a quick work around being a downloadable digital release.

But I am willing to bet the same problem exists on Steam versions, since it clearly lists only "XP and Vista" in system requirements (noticeably excluding Win 7).

I purchased "Star Wars - The Best of PC" retail pack at a local store about 2 months ago, (just to get KOTOR), didn't read the system requirements, and am having the same start-up crash as everyone else on a Win 7 PC. It does, like you say, work on a Vista PC with required patches installed and the securom update.

So, I'd like to add my name to the list of those seeking assistance on the KOTOR for Win 7 issue. Any help here would be appreciated.

I have the original CD version, and it suffers the same problem (running Win7 64-bit). I get past the character creation and opening cinematics, then partway through the opening level on the Endar Spire, and then the game crashes to the desktop.
