Blunt Question: Why are the Graphics So Bad?

Not to offend anyone working on the game but all the screenshots and leaked video so far shows a game with very bad graphics.  I know the console versions of Origins were said to have bad graphics, but comparing the PC version of Origins to these screens leaves a LOT to be desired.  Is it seriously just lacking completed areas and details?  Or is this flat, undetailed look part of the new art style?

For fun, let's compare fur collars from Lost Planet, a 4 year old game, and Dragon Age 2:

Or ground textures from The Witcher 2 and Dragon Age 2:

WHAT?

They aren't.

Don't compare graphics from a cutscene with actual gameplay. If you want to compare teh Lost Planet cutscenes to our Digic trailer, go ahead, that would be valid.

And don't compare a game in it's final stable, shipped condition to a screenshot from a game 8 months away (at the time of the picture) from launch.

While our graphics will be much better by the time we ship, keep in mind we have oodles more dialog, writing and content then Lost Planet (which I finished and enjoyed a fair bit). We will ALWAYS put more dialog, story and content in our games than worry about making sure the fur trim is fluffy enough. Just sayin'

Solid game play>purty lukin grafex. That's what DA:O was about, and it works fine for me. Honestly, if those were PS1 graphics on a PS3 console, i would see where you are coming from.

But i just have to say this....

For the love of god, how much more are we gonna see of this "such a high expectation level that the game isn't going to measure up no matter what" from people.

There's a reason people suggest looking at it from a middle view...

I think they look nice. I'm also sure they'll be better when the game ships.

Well the Lost Planet thing was just an example, and more to point out how bad that fur texture is rather than cause a direct comparison (and that is in-engine Lost Planet, from the PC version).  It just seems like all the pics I have seen shown very poor textures and a flat, featureless ground.  It just feels like March is very soon to have a lot more detail put in the game.

And I agree RPGs don't need to look as good as other genres as they should concentrate on choice, characters, story, dialogue and other such things.  They should still look good though... look at Oblivion or your own Mass Effect series, or even Origins.  Origins on max settings looks tremendously better than the pics I have seen of DA2 so far.

Again, I do not mean to offend.  I guess I am more asking if this is a kind flat and undetailed style you are going for or if the real game will look like this.

Lower quality graphics allow for a larger market.

Why do you think World of Warcaft is much more successful than Terrible Asian MMO With Awesome Graphics #11?

I think the graphics are looking pretty nice from the newer screenshots like that Qunari mages one.

Where did I do that?  I didn't make a judgement on the other aspects of the game, nor did I dismiss the game.  I simply said the graphics so far look poor, because they do.

My thoughts exactly.
I even just like the movement to it. Mind you, I'm biased in that area. Anything with a lot more movement looks better to me - but what I mean is it doesn't look choppy. It's fluid. To me.

I like, that's what I'm saying.

Herr Uhl wins in the war of dueling screenshots! Anyhow, I think this comparison with Lost Planet doesn't really count as has been pointed out. Please give me a ring when you find a screenshot of characters with fluffy, luxuriant fur trim like that from actual gameplay. :P

Lost Planet PC version looks like that in actual gameplay.

And again, it's more there to show how poor the DA2 fur texture is, rather than say it should look like the Lost Planet one.

Yes, that pic is the only one so far that looks good, but the angle and distance makes me wonder how good an example it is.

#1, just like the boss said, its like comparing apples to oranges.

Also, even if they kept the graphics from DA1, I'd be happy! Its a super-solid game with a great adventure story linking numerous characters together with a lot of dialogue. I'd give up a bit of graphics for that any day.

That better?

There is another one with Hawke and the mage-handler/qunari dude. Can't find it though.

Well I think that has a lot to do with gameplay too, actually but this isn't a thread about WoW so I won't go there.

I think there needs to be a distinction drawn between "good" graphics and "high res" graphics. Games like WoW, Katamari Damacy, Jet Set Radio, Okami...these have great graphics, but they aren't in any way high res. It doesn't make them bad.

Conversely I personally think Gears of War looks like a muddy mess despite being higher res and more realistic stylistically.

I'd consider games like Uncharted 2, Red Dead Redemption and Crysis to have graphics that are both great and high res/realistic.

Really? Must recant my previous statement then and take a look at the game sometime. Maybe in winter - it's just too bloody humid here atm. Even looking at pictures of fur-trimmed clothing is making me sweat right now. :P *shakes fist at the currently non-existent tradewinds*

EDIT: Oddly enough, I think we're getting a bit of wind now - woohoo (last two days were HORRID)!

Look at this shot from The Witcher 2:

Then compare that to the ground and textures and such from this DA2 shot:

JRPGs and FPSs have a lot less features than WRPGs and tend to have a lot more budget for graphics.

BioWare games have a lot more than that: choices and consequences, character customization etc which tend to cost a lot of money, so they focus their budget on that.

Then again, look at The Witcher 2, it has a lot more features than DA2 and much better graphics ...
