Saying graphics don't matter is really silly... we would all be playing text adventures if that were true, as there would be no point to spend the money on anything else. Stick figures and floors would be fine for you?
And Baldur's Gate looked beautiful when it came out, and still does in that 2D isometric way.
So, if I don't have an insatiable NEED for the graphics to be next-gen, I must desire no graphics at all. Nice hyperbole.
The Witcher was pretty, but the gameplay made me want to headbutt a kitten into paste.
Dragon Age wasn't the prettiest game on the block, but I loved playing it.
Madden is almost photo-realistic these days. That doesn't make it a good game.

Secondly Chris was responding at the time we only had the sucky screenshots. Which was kinda worrying.
Thirdly, I was speaking about graphics overall in DAO (and DA2) compared to overall in ME1/2.
My biggest problem with the screenies is the texture detail (and that horrible brown filter eugh) largely for the landscapes and skyboxes. They were really undetailed and foggy in early screenshots; the new screenies -appear- to be an improvement but the skyboxes/lanscape textures are much too far away to tell properly.
So you cant say with certainty that the graphics have improved by much; just that bioware have learned to take better looking screenshots.
About DAO the whole lagging thing that happened in busy areas such as Denerim (and ive got a fast computer) and they didnt even have hugely detailed/brilliant looking graphics for DAO could possibly have been why the graphics werent as good as they could have been. I mean with really hires textures the game probably woulda stopped dead in certain places.
Hopefully Bioware will properly optimise the game engine this time round and it wont lag so much, and will allow for better graphics.

The thing is, for me, ever since I heard this is the art tea that worked on JE, I cannot have anything sort of blind faith in them. I thought JE was so visually stunning for its time that I simply cannot do anything other than blindly cheerlead the DA2 approach.
That being said, the chalkspawn are not particulary great as a design. The rotting zombie corpses, though, were even worse, especially with their apparent ability to wear elaborate, ornate full-plate.

Agree with Juneya - and also - the darkspawn in DA2 look a lot closer to the darkspawn in the Sacred Ashes trailer than they did in DA:O. So maybe the graphics are going to be an improvement in DA2. **peers into the distance...I think flamers are coming**
The most alike darkspawn to the ones seen in the sacred ashes trailer are the disciples found in Awakening.
Which I thought looked really damn awesome and hoped for their return in DA2 with a small appearence change.
Alas' that does not seem to be happening at this moment in time, maybe later when the graphics improve.
Oh and what on earth happened to my beloved ogres? one minute they are awesome, next minute they look sad.
@ Original Poster,
Graphics ain't bad from the recent screenshots, textures are however, do take into account these are early screenies.
The Witcher 2 graphics have gone for a realistic taste. Bioware seem to be going for a semi realistic with a twist.
People shouldn't be surprised by this artistic route, it is being used slightly for the Star Wars mmo "SWTOR" after all.
Bioware are good for one thing: impressing when disappointed. I'll hold them to that.

Threads about graphics make me think of that episode of family guy when brian dates the hot blonde that isn't too bright and stewie makes fun of him for it.
Do you mean Gillian?

They're injecting more style into the combat, graphical-look, and apparently the storyline as well. If you liked Origins, then can you not like Dragon Age 2? I mean the games are only what, two years apart? How much of a graphical difference do players expect? They're obviously going to use the same game engine, other stuff, etc.

If the game's graphics are on par with Origins, which I can't see how they couldn't be, then I'll be happy. I do believe the art style itself needs improvement though, which is what the development team have already consistently expressed that they are already doing.

yeah two years. Thats has to be one of the shortest time given to make a squeal, lets hope it pays off

Not to offend anyone working on the game but all the screenshots and leaked video so far shows a game with very bad graphics. I know the console versions of Origins were said to have bad graphics, but comparing the PC version of Origins to these screens leaves a LOT to be desired. Is it seriously just lacking completed areas and details? Or is this flat, undetailed look part of the new art style?
For fun, let's compare fur collars from Lost Planet, a 4 year old game, and Dragon Age 2:
Or ground textures from The Witcher 2 and Dragon Age 2:
WHAT?
Regardless of the responses, thanks for the post. It's a question about which many of us have been wondering.

We've been told they've used a new art style to try and get away from the generic look DA:O had.....wait a minute what generic look? I think anyone seeing gameplay or even a screenshot of DA:O would know instantly what game it was.
Here I think Bioware have invented a problem that didn't really exist and in trying to look more distinct they've actually used a visual style that makes themselves look more generic, already the comparisons to games like Devil may cry and others are there, which must be like a slap in the face.

I own the game and the graphics are really really really ugly... some of the characters (random npcs) look like they belong in Ocarina of time
