Solid game play>purty lukin grafex.

I guess your position is we cannot have both?

We can, but when one must be sacrificed to have the other, I'd prefer gameplay>graphics.

That's why I'm worried about Crysis 2.

Good to see another thread sort of devolve into a Witcher debate.

Similar setting and "mature" content (room for improvement in both DA and TW IMHO), but there might a point with the graphics, if TW2 has open areas (not certain, TW1 was a mix) and those graphics, then DA2 shoul be able too.

See no point comparing DA wih shooters however, in ME2 for example, most gameplay areas are corridors with a background. In DA some open areas were quite big.

you don't need good graphics for a game. WoW graphics are completely outdated yet people enjoy the grindfest.

I'm getting used to it.
Now I'm just waiting for the inevitable lock.

Then again, look at The Witcher 2, it has a lot more features than DA2 and much better graphics ...

Indeed.

If the low-res textures are because of limited console VRAM I hope we have higher-res texture options on the PC.  Not sure about the consoles but Mass Effect on PC has lovely high-res textures, so Bioware has done it before.

Thats what I'm worried about with DA2- that the graphics options or the graphics in general are simplified, especially the textures due to the console's hardware limitations. You saw it in ME2 PC with the terrible textures on the bodies, while ME1 had lovely textures on the PC.

Although I do recall in the Gamescom chat, I think Fernando Melo mentioned they were looking into supporting DX11 which would be most welcome.

And I would agree, as I said my current RPG is the 8 years old and 2D Arcanum.

Still, Bioware is a well funded company within a massive publisher, and their other recent games look very good.  There is no real reason for them to have to lower DA2's graphics.

I always thought, as a game is being built, they just throw in cheesy place holder textures to test mechanics and level design and such. It gets filled in later as the texture people actually spend time working on the final product textures.

^ This. I know the devs roll their eyes at each post deriding the graphics. Plus, I'm one of the few who likes the new art direction.

Well, it's a bit early to make that call. The graphics seem to be improving with each new screenshot we get. I agree that TW2 looks awesome from what I've seen of it, but it doesn't mean DA2 will look bad at release.

This. Its still early. We've got like half a year left to wait.

Although I don't care at all about graphics, we need to look realistically here 'cos I doubt the graphics will change much till release

Well I wouldn't want ultra graphics because this isn't a flight simulator and I would like flawless play with my machine rather than stuttering photographs.

Go to YouTube and look at early gameplay footage of Origins. It is far more primitive looking than the finished product.

Some bickering posts removed.

Not every contemporary game has to have the same sort of graphics. Is Minecraft a terrible game because of its "outdated" graphics? Judging by the number of sales it's seeing, heck no! Is Mafia Wars a better or worse game than Farmville, based on graphics? who can say?

Which Final Fantasy game is better: I, VII, X, or XI? Is your choice based on graphics or gameplay?

Personally, i think there's room in the world for all kinds of different art styles, from cartoony to photorealistic, from monochrome to colour, from hand-drawn to digital. You'll never be able to convince me that WoW graphics aren't just as "good" as Halo 3 graphics, Lego Rock Band graphics, Arkham Asylum graphics and FFX-2 graphics. different games, different styles, different engines, different artists.

Well, each screenshot we've seen so far have had noticable improvements. Example:

compared to an older screenshot:

Lighting and details have improved in the first screenshot from the second.

Subjectively, to me Mass Effect looked much better than Origins and was quite satisfactory. I don't know how better or worse DA2 will be compared to ME, and I won't care if it turns out worse, but it wouldn't hurt if it turns out better.

Mafia Wars has graphics? Isn't it like... just text-based?

Which came out about 1.5 years before release. DA2 comes out in 6 months.

Like I said, I don't care about graphics, but you people need to look realistically 'cos you're only gonna get dissapointed

I don't quite understand the question... This is like asking "why is Varric so hairless?" or "why are the stars so wars?". Based on the screenshots with the Qunari I'd say Dragon Age 2 has better graphics than Dragon Age, though perhaps not quite as good graphics as Mass Effect 2.
