I believe that the "polearm" is indeed the Staff of Parthalan. Note the end of the staff in the trailer and compare.

Don't feel bad. I didn't my item either and I signed up for the newsletter and liked them on Facebook both times the promotion was available to be sure, lol

Hmm, I signed up for the newsletter back in August (I think), then twice more at PAX just to be safe. Have yet to get any kind of Dragon Age 2 correspondence though, just a Witch Hunt announcement e-mail. Hmm.

judging by the description of the staff, it looks like it is mage only, but still, as was said, it is assumed that bethany can use it too, being that she is a hawke

Agreed but if it's use in the trailer has any actual meaning it appears to be a multi-functional staff. As to say that while it may indeed be a magical staff it is quite sturdy and has a very pointy end  .

No real need to use it until Dragon Age 2 is released I imagine.

"Get a friend to sign up to receive Dragon Age e-mail communications during the month of October they will receive a code for the Staff of Parthalan. All they need to do is sign up here:" and then it links to the original DA2 website.

You're supposed to wait for DA2, silly.

You need to keep it until the game's out.
