I dunno animals in video games are portrayed so unrealistically it doesn't really bother me. I mean sure you'd have the occasional wolf attack but that would be really rare. Wolves would more be a problem for farmers, or well anyone with livestock. Other than that they are really unlikely to come near humans especially a human settlement like in the first game. If you ran into a pack they'd either take off or stand really still and watch you till you left.Which happened to me and my mother on a camping trip.
Running into a big group of bears might be a different story, if you surprise them they're likely to rush you and yeah that might be a problem. But it would only take a couple of good hits from a bear and you'd be dead no matter what armour you were wearing(in the game setting) that's why video games are awesome, I can fight bears and wolves and stuff and not die. basically do the impossible/very very unlikely.
