Hello,

Don't know if it's the right place to ask for it, but here goes.

I dug up my old NWN game with both expansions, installed etc, started the game with paladin.
Now, paladin's are supposed to get some spells right? Starting at 6th level or so?
Well
I played my paladin through chapters 1 & 2, up until level 13 or
so. NOT a SINGLE spell. And not talking about class skills (divine
might/shield, lay on hands etc).
Am I missing something? Is this a game version issue/windows issue or something?

No.  This isn't a technical question and belongs in the General forum, but since I'm posting a reply anyway I am guessing your PC doesn't meet the base wisdom requirements.  You need at least 11 for level 1 spells, 12 for level 2 spells, ... etc.  "Base" means without any enhancements (like Owl's Wisdom for instance) or equipment boosts to wisdom.

BTW, if you raise wisdom even higher IIRC at least to 12, you'll be able cast spells at level 4 pally!

That's the whole deal. My wisdom by default is 13 (recommended) - nothing. Then I tried it with 14 and even higher - still nothing:?

Okay.  that's important to know.

Now before you embark on an exhaustive search through the gauntlet of re-installing, re-patching, etc.
Try this:  Download a trainer like Halls of advanced training, a small fast-loading module that will allow you to level a new character fast and try out your spells.  See how your pally works there and report back.

Now...

You COULD just use the console to de-level/re-level in the current module but if there is a corrupted 2da (only a single byte out of whack could cause this problem) being accessed it will likely cause the same problem regardless of the module since MOST non-haked modules use standard 2das.  If the trainer works fine, then the current module got corrupted either in the save or during installation and/or patching.

One thing you haven't mentioned is whether you installed any overrides because that would be my first suspicion as to a probable cause.  With a standard override configuration, the cause lies elsewhere.

Try my suggestion (should take all of about 10 minutes to download and build a new pally) and report the status.  Hopefully, this will at least be able to rule out some of the possibilities before having to wander down another path.

Seems a bit odd. YOu have a base wisdom (not modified) of 11 or higher?

You checked the spellbook and selected them? You gain the ability to cast, but have to select from spellbook which you'll memorize.

Go with the suggestion above to do some testing, if you still have nothing, I'd begin to suspect 2da files.

I'm not much of pally user so if there are any idiosyncrasies to which I am not aware, someone else would need to chime in about those.

One thing I did just test was with a level 4 half-orc pally (pretty weird, eh?) with 16 Wis.  He was allotted a single slot for level 1 spells which worked fine.  Then I changed his alignment to True Neutral, rested him and he still casts just fine. I wasn't sure if any alignment other than LG would still allow him to cast, but it surely does, so no problems there and we can at least cross this off the list of possible burps.

Do you have memorized spells or are you not even able to select what to memorize?

That. I get the skill list, the feat list, but not the spellbook list.

Anyway, the module didnt help with giving my pally any spells either.
HipMaestro you mentioned overriding: Since my original NWN copies are cd's, both expansions, so thats original game + SoU (1st modify of override directory or something like that), + HotU (2nd modify).
Tried it with diamond edition too, was half-sarcastically hoping this all-in-one-go thing would help but nope.
Running the game on Vista btw (yes:/ ), game version with diamond edition was 1.69 or else it wouldn't run on Vista, but oddly enough the 5 cd game had the 1.59 version and it ran with no problems.

Edit: Here's another one to the whole: after seeing fun stuff happen with paladin, decided to make some more chars to check it out. Made a ranger, druid, bard (similar combat casters) - throughout all 20 levels - again, not a single spell. On top of that - not even a spell TAB when viewing character. Made a sorcerer - well he HAS the spellbook, what to memorize etc, in game - again no spell tab.

I gotta admit I'm completely stumped why the spells don't appear.  BTW, Bards are arcane so you would need at least Cha 11 to get any spells.

You won't get a spell tab on the character sheet.  The only way to bring up the spellbook is either to use the icon in the gold group at the top right of the player screen under the portrait or tap the "B" key on the keyboard.

So to summarize:

You are claiming that when you type a "B" nothing pops up at all?  If that is the case, the game didn't install properly.  If you haven't tried yet, you should completely uninstall and then reinstall. Neither the 2das nor anything in the override will affect whether the basic game mechanics are operating.  At least I've never heard of the overrides affecting the basics. Heck, even a pure fighter gets a spellbook pop up when you press the "B" key... there's just nothing listed in the book!

So essentially you will need to find an installation that furnishes the basic functionality (spellbook access) of the game before trying to build anything.  It would be helpful, just as a stab in the dark , to borrow a friend's copy of the Diamond version to at least rule out the possibility that your DVD is corrupted or marred in some way.  Inspect the DVD by eye to see if you notice any scratches or dull spots that may prevent it from loading pristine data.  Try cleaning it in a prescribed manner.  Methods of disc cleaning are documented all over the Web.

Wish I could be more help, but honestly, after reading about the problems folks experience playing NWN for years I have never read anything like this, nothing even close.  Maybe you are stuck using the CD set if it works okay. What happens when you patch the 5-CD version to v1.69... the same queerness?

Well I think problem solved with that stab in the dark. Started replacing my CD's 1 by 1, got a separate copy of the original NWN, and installed the expansions/patches of my own. Apparently something during the installation messed up, but maybe the error was ignored by the installer or I didn't notice, heck - the game would launch and play etc. Though no visible CD damage or anything.

In any case the queerness is over and it's all good now, thanks for all the help.
