After reinstalling dragon age origins to get rid of mods and such that I had a few months back, I re-installed it with patch 1.04 and I'm currently having spell cast delay issues.

For example.

Cast cone of cold and the animation will carry out from my character, yet the actual spell animation + the effects like damage/slow/freeze will occur about 2-3 seconds after, exactly the same happens if I cast a fireball, my character animates, the ball appears a few seconds later on its way to the target, usually the mobs have already left that area by then.

My framerate is perfect too, I don't understand nothing is slow in the game, just these delays which are annoying the hell out of me.

My specs are:

Nvidia Geforce 9600 GSO (Far cry 2 overclocked edition or summit or another)

4GB Ram, Intel quad core 2.4ghz cpu, dx11 with latest gfx drivers, and running Windows Vista.

Patch is currently 1.04.

Seems that other people have experienced the problem, does anyone know the solution to said Combat Lag?

Lowering my video settings "seems" to have helped. I don't know if it helped or if it is a coincidence.

I have been suspecting that the lag/fps issues have something to do with the NPC population coding from the 1.04 patch. I play on a pretty well-built computer and except for the following three zones, my fps and lag are non-existant.

1) Ostagar: Check when you unlock the zone by standing next to the fire where Duncan is. Later on, after Duncan tells you and Alistair to go to the Tower of Ishal, stand in the same spot and check it again.

2) Kocari Wilds: Check when you unlock the zone at the zone in, then check again after everything is dead at the bridge. I use the bridge because there is a lot of detail in that immediate area.

3) Denerim: Check when you first unlock the zone. Check again after the Landsmeet.

Those are the three most "laggy" for me, but the first two aren't a big deal. Denerim pisses me off bad because I usually play a d0rf noble origin and I sell to Gorim. My load times can get ridiculously long in that zone. ><

Oh, and when you're playing disable all of the online stuff. Just turn on the updater when you want to update your profile. Leaving it on is a complete waste of computer resources. I don't run anything in the background and I disconnect my internet when I'm playing DA:O.

Fiddle around with the DA graphic setting file, too. There is an .ini file called "DragonAge" in the settings folder.  Anisotropic Filtering can be set to 16, but Antialiasing, even if you change it to 16, it will keep defaulting back to 8. DA:O looks fine with AF and AA at 8.

I'm currently at redcliffe, during the night battle where the undead attack.

Testing multiple settings and currently no dice, even tried having every setting on low/off and the combat delay is still there, I can cast flame blast, walk around for a few seconds and then suddenly fire comes out of my hand in the direction I'm facing.

If it's worth noting that before I re-installed Dragon Age origins I played through the game as an arcane mage before, and never felt/knew of any spell lag then (having the sheathe weapons to cast made me focus on timings).

It's after re-installing it and updating it to patch 1.04 (Do I need to install the prior patches first?) that this problem has appeared during fights where theres a crowd of npcs, at it's worse is when I can cast a spell or even slice an enemy and the damage will be taken off of their health several seconds later.

It sounds like a software issue, not a hardware issue. It almost sounds like your computer is getting overloaded because of multiple NPC's in the immediate area, which is very odd. I can see it lagging for the first 5-10 seconds maybe, but then it should settle. The fact that you already tested it with lowball graphic settings tells me it's definitely not hardware. It's gotta be a software issue with the DA files somewhere or in your core system files (which would suck bad, but unlikely because the problem only started after the 1.04 patch).

Do you play DA with the uploader on? Turn it off. I also recommend disconnecting from the internet completely when playing DA. If that doesn't help, turn off everything else and run DA with as much resource as you can.

Check the DragonAge_1.log file. It's in the DA "Logs" folder. Open it up (it's a notepad file) and delete all the information in the file. Change it to "Read Only" in properties and it won't record any information. That file can reach epic proportions in size if left on, especially if you do a lot of reloading like I do.

If none of that helps, save any DA files you want on a stick or whatever, do a full uninstall, reinstall and don't patch with 1.04. Put your saved game in, load up, and see if the problem is still there. It should be gone, but if it's still there then your character save files could be corrupted.

Keep trying and keep asking questions. You'll figure it out. It's amazing how a single file can cause such havoc in a computer game.

Thanks for the assist Kernal.

I'm going to update this post as I go through some of the stuff you mentiond, got a save just before a battle and it's currently my testing location, graphics settings are at minimal.

1. Disabled internet/uploader, had no impact.

2. Dragonage_1.log was about 300kb, deleted it and made it read only, had no impact.

Currently installing dragon age...snoooore

Edit: Game installed.

Force loaded the test area save, everything seemed to be working peachy, no delays and the graphics were set on max.

Now going to download the dlc.

As soon as I connected to my EA account, it download DAO_prc_ocp 1 and DAO_prc_onrx 1

3.Downloaded all of the DC I own, Stone Prisoner, Wardens Keep and Return to Ostagar. Forced load the save since I was missing two addons and NO COMBAT DELAY!

Just need to install 2 mods that I use (Character respec/skip the fade) and I'm good to go, although return to ostagar requires 1.02, is there anyway to just download this addon?

Edit: Mod's installed, combat is still lag free, fps is also better than ever.

I'm going to see what happens if I install each patch 1 by 1.

Patch 1.01a: Working fine, combat is delay free.

Patch 1.01b: Working fine, combat is delay free.

Patch 1.02: Combat seems very very slightly delayed in an area with a lot of npcs.

Patch 1.03: Same as 1.02, barely noticeable.

Patch 1.04: Delay is worse than the previous 2 patches, although it's not as bad as it was before installing each patch seperately.

I'd like to downgrade to 1.02, but I can't see this happening without re-installing the game, also I'd like to get the other DLC but I guess they need 1.04, which is annoying!

Are Bioware working on another patch soon enough to sort out the combat delay that alot of people are experiencing?

Ive had the same problem, tho it seems to only affect me when there are a lot of spell effects going on such as aoe's. One slight fix i found was turning off one of the effects in graphics, i dont remember what its called, but it deals with the glow effects like the green fog at redcliffe. That helped a little. But its been bad enough that ive stuck with only casting heal spells, and nothing is worse than seeing yourself cast heal....and then it goes off 10 sec's after your tank died. lol
