Granted, it comes with a trade off of some moral nastiness. Perhaps Griffons eat the flesh of elves?

Absolutely worth it.

There not really that great of a species, Griffons.
If they all died out then that shows they are a failure as a species.

Besides no multi-celled species can exist around the eating of a single type of food.
Also I will resit standing up for the elves since I know the both of you consider them inferior and its a pointless argument really.

Koalas do

Koalas do

No they dont:
Koalas are very fussy eaters! Their diet consists of leaves from eucalyptus trees. Eucalyptus leaves are very fibrous and low in nutrition. Koalas are the only mammal that can survive on eucalyptus trees. To most animals eucalyptus leaves are very poisonous! Sometimes koalas will eat from other trees such as wattle, tea tree or paperbark. They also eat gum leaves. Gum leaves contain a lot of water, so koalas don't have to drink. They eat about 200 to 500 grams of food per day. They sometimes store extra food in their pouch! A koala will pull down a branch of eucalyptus or gum leaves and sniff the juicy buds before it decides to eat it or not. Koalas also sleep up to 16 hours per day in order to conserve energy.Baby koalas drink their mother's milk for the first 6 to 7 months. After that they start eating gum leaves.

well Griffons could be in an extinct flock like somebody else said earlier. IRL, We have believed animals were extinct only to discover one 50-100 years later. Here is a link of 14 of them

Except that those are small animals for the most part, and ones that live in the most remote places in the world.

Its kind of hard to miss a giant griffin flying around. With no sightings in hundreds of years its almost impossible that they survived.

The world of Thedas also thought dragons were extinct, you know - until they showed up again.

Griffons may be back.

I think I was a bit disappointed, too, by the lack of the Warden's appearance as he was in the trailer. The glowing eyes. The armor.
I was expecting the Joining would give more talents and abilities than just being able to sense the Darkspawn.
But that didn't mean the game was lacking, either. :]

Hey, if it means we gotta feed some stinkin' elves to get griffons back, I'm all for it! Let's bring the Griffons back from extinction and put the elves on the endangered species list!

I don't consider it genocide. It's common sense to me. /shrug

Griffons are awesome, but they and mounts are kind of pointless in a non-open world where you gate from place to place. You'd get on your mount, and right back off again.

I fully expect some sort of side quest at some point in order to recover Griffons for the Wardens.

I don't know if Griffons would really fit to the game. Dragon Age is supposed to be a Dark Fantasy game compared to the "normal" High Fantasy environment. It's a key feature that the Grey Wardens are not the legendary heroes everyone thinks they are and having lost their former mounts further shows that not everything goes as it should be going for the good side.

But in a High Fantasy world, I agree, Griffons would be awesome.

But in a dark fantasy there's always a hero! so give em' something special instead of just tainted blood :P

I think they should just bring them in at the end of the final dragon age game so the make the last battle a lot more epic

I think it would be quite funny if Wynne and Shale become a Thelma and Louise traveling team, and Shale was obsessed with killing every pigeon she found, while Wynne is blasting every griffon she sees with stonefist and knocking them out of the sky. The tragic end comes when Wynne is torn apart by a pack of vengeful griffons, and Shale is buried and encased alive in a pile of their droppings, which turns to stone over eons.

EPIC.

That reminds me of the Zelazny story "Unicorn Variations".  When species became extinct, mythical species popped up to replace them.  I think the griffons appeared after the American Eagle went extinct.  Unicorns were to replace human beings.

Griffons may be extinct now, but that doesn't mean that one (or a number of them) could still be found somewhere in the world; turned to stone, held in stasis or magical prisons, etc. It would be kind of cool if the Warden (or Hawke) discovers a magical prison that's holding a number of griffons (maybe their riders too) in stasis for hundreds of years.
