I confess I have never taken on beholders without the cloak of mirroring & shield of balduran.

At least, the beholders in the Underdark. Underneath Athkatla one is most likely to meet gauths & a few beholders, which is easily dealth with with some protection scrolls.

But in the Underdark, one will meet legions of beholders & some Elder Orbs, who endlessly spam deadly spells & anti-magic rays. How does one deal with this? Spell trap/spell turning/whatever don't really last long against an endless stream of magic.

You can probably tank them with proper spell buffs and/or equipment (other than the cloak + shield). I usually just nuke them with arcane spells and pull them around their twisty passages into close range of my melees. Works well enough, even if you don't know what you're doing. Gotta be careful though.

Use summoned creatures against them. Skeleton Warriors are particularly good for this purpose due to their high magic resistance and undead immunities. A group of 5 skellies can easily wipe out 4-5 beholders, maybe even more if they take them on one at a time.

Other than that, an invisible mage firing off a 3x Sunfire spell trigger can usually take out a large group beholders in one shot. Also, the (Greater) Deathblow HLA allows warriors to kill most beholders in one hit, no save allowed. This really rocks if you have an improved hasted archer with 9 attacks per round who can pick off the beholders from a safe distance while the summons distract them.

I normally go for Viconia buffed to 100% magic resistance. Although in my latest playthrough using SCS II, that didn't seem to work so well and I don't know why ...

Beholders can obliterate your defenses with 1 (one) Anti-Magic Ray. There are a couple of spells that can protect against it but not long enough to make it matter when fighting multiples. Items with MR are better than buffing, especially if the character has a naturally high MR already. I don't know anything about SCS, but maybe the Beholders in that now have the ability to lower MR? I know in Tactics, at least the version I have of it, the Beholders will stop using their magics eventually and try to bite you to death instead, thus lowering the usefulness of the respective shield or cloak by a little.  Elder Orbs and such will still use Imprisonment and the like.

Spell Shield protects against the anti-magic ray and doesn't go down, but this is probably a bug.

Elder orbs also like to use Death spell, so all summons save for planetars, devas & pit fiends are useless.

Unfortunately, any character that doesn't have the means to protect themselves from Anti-Magic Ray is doomed from the start, in regards to buffing I mean.

I'm not sure about these, tbh, but you could try:
- I seem to recall that Spell Immunity has 2 effects: 1)it protects from whatever school you choose, and then 2) it automatically protects from Abjuartion. I might be entirely mistaken on this, but SI is worth checking out. If my recollection is correct, I think I'd use Enchatment/Abjuration. If I am wrong, then try 'em all!
- Spell Shield (I recall reading on the old boards that it is, in fact, bugged. It's supposed to protect from only 1 (one) dispel type attack, then go down)
- Spell Trap
- Protection from Magic Scrolls
- Shield of the Archons (level 7 priest spell)
- Improved Invisbility
- Mass Invisibility (iirc it's like Improved but for the whole party?)
- A Berserker berserked

I can't think of anything else atm.

EDIT:  Whether I was right or wrong about Spell Immunity, I do believe you need to use it last when buffing.  It has a relatively short duration, and, for example, SI: Abjuration prevents you from using more abjuration magic on you (no more Abjuration buffs).

I think the only non-cheesy way is to try and blind them with Glitterdust or Power Word: Blind.

In P&P, Beholders don't have a anti-magic ray, but it is more an effect of the gaze of their central eye (more of a cone). So it makes sense to try to disable them by taking away their sight or poking out their eye.

A particularily effective tactic is to use Mislead.

I am fairly certain Spell Immunity will not work. Their beams do not have a school attached to them.

I normally hit them with malison / fireball from multiple casters, using sequencers if I have them. Particularly with the eyestalk damage component of SCS2 (or Questpack), this works well enough for standard beholders and gauths.

I'm struggling to find an equivalent strategy for my current no-caster group, I may have to resort to the cloak or shield, although the SCS2 item randomiser has moved the shield and quite possibly the cloak too. I managed to get past the beholders guarding the unseeing eye bridge using mainly luck, so haven't tried the main area yet.

IIRC I always used protection from petrification.

Most (all?) of the Beholder effects can be saved against, so a potion giving pluses (minuses, really) to saving throws should work. I'm not sure if the Anti-magic ray dispels potions, but IIRC, it doesn't.

Depending on mods, some do dispel potions

Default behaviour is that any dispel effect automatically remove all potions effects (except Potion of Magic Blocking). Afaik the only mod that makes potions effects undisppellable is this.
