Same exact problem. Why are so many of you suggesting that you talk to Liara about certain things before the SB DLC? That's just like saying "Yeah just reload all the way back before you did the SB" or whatever the hell else you did after that, that's not a solution, and you're just being redundant at this point.

BIOWARE FIX THIS IT SHOULD BE EASY.

Edit:  There is even a way to access her terminal in her office after she leaves, which is what I think they had intended to use as a way to still start the assignment for Thane and Samara.  When I click on info on Samara though, it just exits the computer screen.  Wtf.

That was indeed the intent.  You're supposed to be able to access the same information that you get from Liara from her computer console after you've completed the DLC mission.

i would also like to add:

i called EA's tech support (mass effect reverts to EA tech support, don't worry about it), and while i could not get a fix or a workaround, i did get a refund and a free coupon for extra bioware DLC for my trouble. while it does not repair the damage from losing my great savegame and that 40 hours (ouch), i have to commend EA (*not* bioware) for providing decent service.

the number, if anyone else would like to try, is 1-650-628-1001.

Perhaps you should have tried reading the forum description at the start, rather than providing an "angry bump"

Mass Effect 2 PC Technical Support (Spoilers Warning)
This forum is for fans and owners of Mass Effect 2 on the PC to assist each other with technical questions. Official game support is provided by Electronic Arts, but fans are encouraged to try to assist each other here.

A quick search of the forums would have shown you the various threads already dedicated to this issue, and even reading this thread would have told you its a known bug, and loading a previous save is the only known way around it thus far.
As a side note, if you go along and just rely on the one single save to get you through the game, you are asking for trouble. Not just because of ingame bugs, but also just general windows screwups. Always have 4 or 5 saves at various points in the game.

Don't complain here, theres no point. EA provide the official support, so they are the ones you have to complain to.

Besides, if you dont make regular saves of your game, you have noone but yourself to blame if a minor glitch (and yes, this is a minor one), "ruins" your game. This bug has been known for a while, and keeping up to date with the happenings of the tech support forum is the best way to ensure any bugs that do crop up, dont affect you.

Yeah, because it is OUR fault that they can't make DLC that isn't bugged, and end up ruining our game....

If we don't know about the bug, we don't know to look for it or to save before doing it. I do save often, but I also delete my saves after a while so I don't have random files on my computer. Thought I was safe, so I deleted the saves, then... NO SAMARA FOR YOU

What part of

keeping up to date with the happenings of the tech support forum is the best way to ensure any bugs that do crop up, dont affect you.

did you fail to comprehend?

Keep up to date on the known bugs, and workarounds, and they wont affect you. Simple. Live your life in blissful ignorance, and they'll get you. Or are you one of these people who demand to be spoonfed everything?

There certainly is someone to blame for this: some folks at Bioware who let this slip by (while, let's give them some credit, doubtless catching other, similarly bad bugs that also would have been terrible). It is Bioware's responsibility to catch things like this.

Though, it certainly would be a bit odd to assume they'll do a completely perfect job. These are huge games. This is isn't the first time Bioware has released/not fixed a major scripting bug. (E.g. Silverite Mines in Dragon Age Awakening.) Bogsnot does give sound advice that keeping regular saves and/or following the tech forums is always the safest course if you really hate being bitten by bugs like this.

Could we please not give each other heat for Bioware's responsibilities?

I know ya' don't want to have to...but try loading an earlier save, before LOTSB, and try recruiting Samara. Perhaps playing the game in a sequence more in tune with the game's progression we reopen these areas?

I suspect he may not have a save to go back to, based on what he said about feeling it was safe to delete older saves; really dumb idea if you ask me, as there are probably other files on any gamer's PC that could be eliminated without risking this sort of bug.

@Bogsnot1

Yeah, I started playing Mass Effect 2 again they day I downloaded LotSB. I understood what you said... doesn't mean I agree with you. Shouldn't have to vigorously check all forums every single day relating to a game I want to enjoy just to make sure that some new bug hasn't popped up . The fact that they released it should be good enough that it doesn't have a game breaking bug...

@daywalker03

I delete any files I think are safe to delete because I have an older computer. If I had the money to get a new computer, I wouldn't have to, but as of right now, memory is an issue.

I just got a reply from someone at the EA support web site. Given, when I typed my message I wasn't feeling well, so my thinking was hindered, but all the pertinent information was there.

"Response Greg 02/12/2011 09:47 PM

Hello,

Thank you for writing back to us.

Looking into your situation you need to uninstall and reinstall your game.

(I am not feeling good right now, so I opted to e-mail instead of the live chat, sorry)

I just downloaded the "Lair of the Shadow Broker" DLC for mass effect 2 a couple days ago. When I was done with its plot line, I was then going to do the "Samara" recruiting mission. I accessed the laptop where Liara was, and clicked select on the information for Samara, but instead of updating the quest, it just exited out of the laptop. I cannot further the quest, I have tried. I don't know what to do with this."

So apparently you have to uninstall your game to fix this bug.

You got a generic "F**ked if we know, just reinstall it" response.

I doubt the bug was picked up on in testing as they would have been testing it logically, and not considered all the very simple things that people could possibly do to break the game. Logically, when you go to speak to Liara, you should be more interested in getting the info you need from her first, before rushing off to kill the SB.

I played it in a RPG way... I just ran into an old friend, so I was interested in what she was up to (that and I just downloaded it and wanted to play it, lol)

but yeah, that's what I got from it. I started over, I know how to avoid it now, so it's all good now.

Quick question though (maybe a dumb one). All I need to do is get the info from her before going off to do the shadowbroker quest, right?

Its not fixed because people come here, ask, and get the workaround, and then dont bother logging it with EA to get a support ticket for this particular problem, which is how they track these issues. Once an issue gets a certain amount of hits, they start looking at allocating resources toards fixing it.
If you have already recruited Thane, apparently there is a workaround involving Gibbeds save game editor where you can deselect Thane from your party, and that will then allow you to start Samaras recruitment. Havent tried it for myself, so I cant say for sure.

@Spyke: Im a bit late answering, but yes, all you have to do is ask her for the intel on Thane and Samara, you dont have to go off and recruit them before LotSB, although both their pull and throw abilities are very useful on the outside of SB's ship. Not to mention the unique line that SB has for each squadmember you take along to face him with.

If you want it fixed, lodge a support ticket with EA, and hope enough people have actually dont the right thnig and lodged their complains with EA in order to statr getting the resources allocated to fix this issue.
If you dont want to do this, then load an earlier save, and talk to Liara first.

All I can suggest now is shoot off a message to Chris Priestly and/or EA_AgentX.
EA support telling you to come here to get it fixed wouldbe like Ford telling you to go to your local tyre shop if the wheels of your new car kept falling off due to bad axle design.

There is a workaround using Gibbeds save game editor, but not 100% sure how it works. Something to do with unselecting Thane from yuor squad, landing on Illium, and then talking to Dara. Theres another thread floating around somewhere with moer detailed info.

I too am having this problem. I've been playing for a while, but never really bothered with DLC. EA support keep directing me to post the issue here and assure me it'll get sorted if I do...

On Xbox forum it was confirmed that using gibbed editor to remove Thane then opens up the computer in Liars's office to get Samara. You then just add Thane back, once the mission is triggered.

Ever since completing Lair of the Shadow Broker, not only can I neither recruit Samara nor Thane, but I can't actually even enter the area I would have to reach to do so. About halfway down the hallway that is beneath Liara's office, my game freezes. I never had this problem prior to completing LotSB, and yet now I cannot even access that area from saves before I came to Illium.

It seems unlikely anyone here has the answer, but I figured I might as well ask if there is any known solution to this bug? Had I known in advance, I never would have purchased the DLC to begin with.
