I'm looking into replaying ME1.  I played it once on the 360, but couldn't do more than that because the Mako sections were such a bore.  I'm interested in ME2, and want to know what I'm missing out on if I don't have ME1 data to carry over.

As far as I'm aware, all it does is affect the storyline. Some of the choices you make in the first game will have a direct consequence in the second.

If you import a save your Shepard will die of multiple sclerosis as soon as the game starts.

The decisions you made in the storyline in ME1 e.g on Virmire effect the storyline in ME2, you also start off with 50,000 of each materials (platinum ect) you also start off with more credit than people who didn't import and im not sure about this next bit but i think you start off a few levels higher as well

Decision effects are really miniscule; emails and small cameos mostly... but for some reason the game seems emptier when you don't import.

I am pretty sure you get 50K of each material +300,000 Credits IF you finished ME2 twice, or once with a ME1 character. For level 50 you get 5K of each resource + 30K (or 100K ) credits, level 60... I never went past 56.

If you're playing as a paragon then it sucks starting a new character without importing a save since many of the default decisions which carry over are renegade.

^ open the save editor, look into the section about ME1 flags and you'll see all the plot flags to be set in ME1.

I'd also use the save editor to just give yourself infinite minerals because scanning for hours on end is the most asinine thing implemented in ME2.

Actually, all the decisions are the center options, where you made no real choice.  So they're the Renegade outcomes without any of the points.
