Haha- true. I don't get why some people go out of their way to hate characters either- like how some people despise Morrigan or Alistair. If you don't like a companion, simply don't use them and leave them at camp; when they whine tell them to shove off. Problem solved.

Perhaps some people feel compelled to engage them in dialogue? Masochists, probably.

At any rate, I actually like the fact that people have an intense dislike for some characters. If a character is either loved or hated but everyone has a strong opinion either way, it's a sign they were very successful.

It amuses me to no end to know that when people come onto the forums to rage about a character they are, in actuality, asking for more of the same. But I'm perverse like that.

Well I still talked to Wynne to get her personal quest even though I really did not like the old school mistress thing going.  I am pretty sure that is what most people are complaining about.  You can't really do 100% of the game if you ignore Morrigan  because she disapproves of everything and never do her Grimoire search.  But Mary mentioned something about a rivalry system so hopefully that should deal with that little issue.

What was it Reggie Jackson said? "They don't 'boo' nobodys" - when characters are strongly loved or hated, something has been done right.

Rose-coloured glasses, much? I assure you the followers in BG2 were just as whiny-- when you got to actually speak to them. Which was comparitvely little. Maybe that's better? Less chances to whine. ;)

Whiny isn't necessarily bad.  Remember Xan.

You won't find me disagreeing. I adored Aerie, for instance, though I'm not sure I would do that again.

Some people like to whine, however. And by that I don't mean the characters.

Although, I did hate Oghren in Awakening- but that had more to do with him becoming a dwarven Jar Jar Binks and having his  approval impossible to raise no matter what you did.

That's overstating the issue, I think, but I'll grant that it was annoying how he begins at 0 approval even if he knows you and the game's gift mechanic acts as though you've already given him gifts.

Eh I always chalked it up to Awakening was a rush job and wasn't fleshed out or balanced very well.

I hated Morrigan. The game forced me to have her in the group because of the ridiculous amount of power a mage had compared to the other two classes. So I hated her even more. She was supposed to be a survivalist and freedom lover, yet she came out as a puppy punter. And not the fun kind of puppy punter, either. She didn't even kick them that far.

I am hoping that we will continue to have some Camp experiences with our companions. While it was fun to have some random dialogue encounters on the trail with companions in DAA, I also enjoyed being able to relax a bit between quests at some scenic spot and discuss thoughts of the day.

As for personalities, I have enjoyed HK-47 and Shale as unique observers in their respective games. Hope another one like them is in store for DA2.

[/i]I loved the BG series and it's characters...but the character interaction in BioWare's modern games is definitely better.  And yeah, people tend to forget that when you clicked on a BG party member, you'd get the message, "[Name] has nothing to say to you."  Conversations were at THEIR leisure, not yours, generally triggered by a timer.

This is partially what made them feel more alive - like they had a mind of hteir own. These days, EVERYTHING is player-initiated.

And yeah..some poeple really whine too much about a specific NPC being a whiner. I had no problem with Alistair or Carth of Aerie.

The only companion I hated was Sten.

Hey Sten, Want to talk?

No.

Okay, How about later?

No.

Okay, see you around I guess.

Bye.

The whole "I'm too cool to say anything" act is pretty annoying to me

I want to hate the characters, because I feel if I am suppose to like them then I will hate them. But if I am suppose to hate them, then I will probably respect them.

Carth and Alistair ring a bell?

I don't think they're alike...at all. I just finished my first play of KOTOR a few days ago and the entire time I played I wanted to punch Carth. He just went on and on about his trust issues and I'm not sure Alistair did anything that bad. Alistair had a personality and a sense of humor as well; two things Carth did not.

I love all of Bioware's characters, I'll admit I do alot of "whining" myself on these forums but mostly about mechanics and graphics and such. David Gaider and team are the best. Even if they never make anything good again, I will always consider them awesome for creating 37 of the best characters in my favorite series ever, Baldur's Gate 1,2 and ToB.

I'll also admit I have the rosiest of glasses when it comes to those games but seriously... 37 party members over 2 games and a party consisting of 6 characters. The combinations of characters and the interactions between them were priceless. I still play BG series and it stands as the game I have the most playthroughts on (even more impressive because it takes prob more then 200 hours to get through the whole series if you play like I do)

Like Gaider mentioned, "whiny" or "annoying" characters can still be great characters because It ads to the uniqueness and believability of the characters. Not everybody is going to behave just the way you want or "normal" all the time. I mean Tiax from Baldurs Gate (where I get my avatar name) was an insane half-ling with napoleon complex and had a fetish for world domination.

I can say that generally I do like the older Bioware characters better then the newer ones (loved Morrigan and Jack though) but compare ANY Bioware character against those other rpg's, Bioware and the Gaider crew beats them hands down every time.

@Mr. Gaider: whiny isn't always bad. Characters have problems and they handle it differently. I understand. Sten loses his sword and brings shame to his people, so he kills darkspawn and steals cookies from fat kids. Alistair I get. Daddy died. So he cries about it. Oghren is an alcoholic because he either killed his wife or she left him for a magic anvil and another woman (this one really sucks). I think the main reason I hate Carth is that his whining is coupled with paranoia. No matter how many kittens I'd Force-shake out of trees as Revan he'd still be ****ing about not trusting me cause his ex-employer bounced in the middle of the night to save his own ass and his wife died in a war. This is not a good combo when it comes to character traits. Kaidan was whiny in that sensitive dude sort of way but nothing over the top. A lot of the hate he does get is because of Carth. So please.... Carth... No.

I wonder who we'd get if the character were to be modeled on, say, Chris Priestly.

And I'm not going to be the one to risk comparing him to ANY character in Origins or DA2.

That would actually be a very funny idea. Base each character off a certain co-worker without telling the fans and see who's most popular. =P

People who whine about characters that whine...it's like the circle of life! Considering how often people do complain about assorted things on the forums, I find my NPC companions' issues almost soothing in comparison. And I liked Carth and Alistair - neener neenner! :P

Can I complain about complaining?

No? Okay then, I'll just say that BioWare has the best consistent attention to detail when it comes to character development and storyline out of any gaming company out there.

Good job BW, stay awesome.

I hope the companions are more involved in the end game. Once you got to the landsmeet, everyone except Alistair, Morrigan and Loghain became irrelevant except as people to help you kill things.

I dunno much like Carth, Alistair tends to come off pretty whiny at alot of points in the game. Kaidan as well now that I remember back. To be honest I've felt the quality of the writing when it comes to companions the last few titles hasn't been quite as interesting as it was with BG and BG2, imo anyway.

You realized that THE whiniest Bioware character ever made was in BG2, right ?
Or did you wanted to forget about Aerie ?

She's the only character I would actually call "whiny" in fact, and this has more to do about her childish way to attract attention and look for being reassured (which is actually totally in-character, as she WAS something like a kid) than about complaining at all - she had reasons to complain ; she was just tiring about how much she was focused on it.

I tend to be much more annoyed by people complaining about "whiny" characters than characters talking about their problem, in fact. Someone live a traumatic event and has trouble to deal with ? That's normal, that's human and that's expected. Calling "whiny" anyone who is not perfectly okay with his life - when said life usually involve some of the said traumatic events - ? THAT is just idiotic. Especially as most of the people complaining about "whiny characters" are usually making more whining for much less important causes.

I liked Carth too. And Kaidan. And Alistair. None of them felt "whiny" to me. They just had issues, like everybody. It takes more of a man to recognize his issues and work on it than to hide them under a macho façade, honestly.

Its like Chris Avellone mentioned in this interview- RPGs need to react to the PC:

Yeah, but then, Chris Avellone is basically God.

I know, I usually HATE fanboyism, but this guy is my exception. I allow myself one worship subject.
