This took me some time to figure out, and I can more or less guaranty that it will work no matter your system specs or OP.

Steps:
1. Double-click on Dragon Ages: Origins' icon on your desktop.
2. Click the "Configuration" option.
3. Go to "Video" and set the Texture and Graphics detail to Medium.
4. Disable Full-Screen mode and set the Resolution to 1024 x 768.
5. Exit Configuration and Save your settings.
6. Click "Play" and enjoy the game!

My guess is that the DA:O has bugs in full-screen mode, because disabling full-screen mode fixes all the bugs I had so far: Conversation crashes, random crashes to desk top, and crashes at certain points in the game.

IMO, there are an assortment of very Low End hardware components that are not really good enough even for 1024 by 768, and yet they have every needed graphics function other than memory bandwidth and decent SPEED. Those will need an 800 by 600 resolution in order to have normal frame rates.

Hi lads im having no luck running this in win 7 64 bit i've tried all the fixes on the forums from disabling cores/dual core optimizer to catalyst ai and all the above. Nothing works still random crashes requiring a hard reset.

My specs are

Ati 5670

Athlon 2 x3 445 @ stock speed

2 gigs ram

Via chipset audio

All the drivers are up to date and I have no stability issues with any other game, I'm totally stumped. Little peeved too as so many people are reporting problems with totally different hardware on win 7. There is no way this should have got passed beta testing, and if i'd known it was not going to work with my OS i wouldn't have bought it in the first place. I have a €20 beer coaster (Christ that's 5 beers, what a total waste).

Your hardware is fine, and Windows 7 is fine, except when we are dealing with patch 1.03 / 1.04 for a too-high proportion of gamers.  You need to go to Microsoft and look up the specific steps shown there for running a Clean Boot procedure in Win 7.  You have something besides the game and the hardware to chase down, and the Clean Boot offers you just about the only way to find what it is.

You should patch to at least 1.02A, also.

The only sure workaround is to keep your game version at 1.02a. Support effectively ended after 1.02a was released.

Right oh lads, cheers I'll try reinstalling and going back to patch 1.02a.

I (like a fool) just downloaded the latest patch expecting it to fix the random crashing. I'll then try the litany of fixes on that version. Thanks for your help guys. I'll let ya know if I get any luck.

Well I'll be damned, came across the fix more or less by accident.

It seems Dragon age likes Netframework...just up dated my version to 4 an Voila working dragon age....(well still the odd crash and memory leak issue but at least I can play it). So there ya go lads if your still having a hard time with win 7 try updating netframework. Anyone else heard of this? I couldn't find anything like it when trawling through all the different fixes and it says nothing about it on the box. Weird.

I have heard this, and for the most part my game works with 1.04... however, the real problems start when I try casting mana clash.

Yeah I found certain areas wouldn't load untill I patched to 1.04, and some of the magic effects do seem to cause crashes. Still I suppose paying for a game an expecting it to run perfectly is too much to ask... Am I right in thinking they don't like to call em bugs anymore? I think the new term is challenges.... So dragon age is challenged... Like retarded but in a nice way...

Obviously, crashes occur when spells with graphical effects are cast (like Inferno, Fireball & Tempest). I'm not sure, but I haven't experienced that many crashes after I installed a general 3 gb patch for 32-bit games. I just found & installed a 4 gb patch (http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php).
Apparently, the problem with Dragon Age and most other games is that it doesn't take full advantage of the memory available on most computers.
All I can say is that the effect was immediate on my computer. Crashes still happen now and then, but they're rare now.

This does nothing to remedy the problem with broken spells.

The only way to prevent random crashes is to have the game patched to 1.02A and update to 1.03 / 1.04 when and if you want to play the expansion and the DLC or do not play as a mage because many spells are broken.

I am aware of this problem. I am currentl trying to fight the Archdemon using two mages (main character + Morrigan). The crashes seem to occur whenever the Archdemon uses its blue Corruption Blasts and subsequently sets off from the ground and into the air (in other words: animation overload).

The game now crashes far more often than it has so far while using this character (& version 1.04).

In my current installation I have not installed the expansion (Awakening) or any DLC (since it downloading doesn't work)
