I am having some trouble with this quest.  I have fought the shade located in the lower ruins of brecilian forest, but it did not drop the key to open the hall door.  The quest dissapeared from my quest menu after the shade was defeated.   If this quest does not open the hall door than what does? 

Also what is the broken altar for in the library close by?

Figured out what the alter is for- arcane warrior

Before you get to the pool with the earthen jar you can find a tablet in a sarcophogus that details the ritual. The altar down the hall is part of getting the arcane warrior specialization.
