I haven't played Awakening. But in a level-based game with talent trees, it can be frustrating to find that choices that weren't obvious 12 levels ago are now hamstringing your character.
I agree. I hated mages for example when I first started playing DAO cuz I wasn't picking the right spells or when I'd finally figure out, damn I reaaaallly should have gotten mana clash but I'd spent my points on trying to get storm of century combo - which while pretty to look at, isn't really practical, lol.

It should definitely be there. The ability to play around with skills and just reset if you don't want them anyway is excellent and allows you to try out your character in many ways!
So does restoring an old saved game. That lets you try out different skills on the same encounters, so you get a real comparison of the skills.

Why wouldn't there be when Bioware recognised the problem with this in Awakenings?Harid wrote...
I'm betting on no, and I am betting that someone has already stated that there will be a mod for it, when that doesn't fix the problem for everyone.

That's like saying, just start over and try again, wtf, lol.
Sorry, I should have been clearer. I meant not to start over, just start the encounter. Spec one way, run a big batlte or two, load the saved game, spec a different way, run the same battle again. That way you get to compare the two specs on the same battle.

1) I'd like to save skill points and/or attributes. I can't tell you how many times I just wanted to put in attributes for items without wasting a skill on something I needed to be many levels higher for.
2) I'd like companions to not auto-level up before acquiring them, or if anything, only level up their specialty tree.
3) I'd like a quest related respec system, or atleast a limited supply of them, say only 3 in the mirror of transformation, or something of that nature.
4) I'm also a fan of a set number of attributes/skills throughout. 1 skill every two levels or whatever and 3 attributes every level, or whatever number seems fair. I get so aggrivated when I find out that the calculations I've made are all wrong because I only recieve 1 attribute every level past 10.
5) I'm also fond of the main character getting a little specialty treatment compared to party characters. 1 more attribute per level, or more skills, or quests that specifically doctors up yourself over them. You're champion, and they're not, after all.

I dislike respeccing because it's incoherent, takes the weight of your decisions and removes that sense of slowly developing and mastering one's character.

i.e: oh thanks for having your 2H warrior spec maxed out Oghren.........
Just saying I never understood that.........sure I understand they want to say "hey this is what this char does", but I think maybe only one point would be sufficient when everything else is blank....

Not that I don't see advantages to not having respeccing. Part of the fun of Mass 2 was the limitations of your party members and needing to pick a couple for a mission and have a plan. That was cool. That's where limitations actually add to the gaming experience. In that game, their limitations were a part of who they were.
But in Dragon Age, I don't think of the characters quite the same way. Combine the abilities? Sure. But I think in terms of mage abilities and warrior abilities and rogue abilities and tank abilities and healer abilities and so forth. I don't think in terms of Fernis abilities and Aveline abilities. To me Fenris and Aveline are their stories. So I don't see a fixed spec adding to the game in Dragon Age.

However, other people using them doesn't effect me one iota.

Respec should come with a greater drawback than a few gold and a few minutes cooldown. It is necessary, but it can't be too easy. Leave insta-respecs for games like WoW, where the mentality of players can be summed up in 'now, now, NOW.'
I would say WoW players are quite patient, considering the massive number of hours they put into the game. Sure, the game lacks an overall story, which, is blah... but, have you seen how tedious that game gets at the end?

I dont really need a respec for the main game but once DLC/Expansions begin to arrive it would be a nice option to have with possible new skills and foes!.
