Not to mention that it is really bad style to talk about ex's on first date. Or second. Or third.

Especially ones that you clearly aren't over.  *glares meaningfully at Thane and Carth*  AHEM.

I also understand that this is metagaming, but you can't tell me that seeing the same storytelling device over and over again doesn't affect the player.  So please, for DA2, can we have a bit of a break from this?  There are plenty of other tropes out there--give them some love :D

Seriously?

Zevran mentions his former lover once, and it's in the context of "I feel guilty for having killed her" and not "I miss her so much" and that's the only one in all of DAO and we STILL have the "OH MY GOD THIS IS SO OVERRRRUUSSED!" thing going on?

Get. Over. It.

Marjolaine?

We have a winner.

How about a game with no romances, that would be different.

Sure,
why not?  I enjoyed Awakening, and it had no romances.  My favorite
interactions with recent BioWare characters have been the
non-romanceable ones: Sten, Legion, EDI, Mordin, Samara, Justice, Shale.
I want interesting, meaningful character interactions.  They don't
have to be romances.

There was a Samara romance btw.

Made me wonder why in DA:O not once was your ex mentioned or could you bring them up into a conversation.
I would have least thought it could have popped up in the "Are you a virgin" Talk with Alistair.

I don't know what you mean. I only talked about lampposts. Image IPB

Only Alistair could come up with something like that... and yet I saw not a single Lamppost, they must be with the bowstrings...just hanging out in some tavern in gwaren.

Technically, Leliana talks about her former lover after you kill her

I'm not talking about any one specific case, but rather its consistent use across multiple titles.  Of course I understand that no one writer is responsible across titles, but it does get used in a lot of BioWare's games with some consistency.  Kind of like Obsidian and their trope of EVERYTHING IS HORRIBLE :P

Mr Gaider, the people on these forums will complain about everything. Heck if half of Mass Effect 3 was about Tali, the Talimancers would probably complain that "dem hips" are not the same.

Just keep making the great stuff you've been making.

Yeah but Obsidian needs that because they're really bad at making games (bugs and other people's engines FTW) so they need to cover it up with something that fanbois will say "w0w d33pness" to.

Ah... The burdens of free will, huh? You can never please everyone. I don't mind what tropes are used, but I do hope for more variable Interests. That's pretty much it...

This should be worked into Hawke's Dialouge options. At least 20+ times. Hawke needs a catchphrase.

*sigh*  I think on the whole, I've been relatively not complainy.  I am, in fact, psyched for DA2, love what they've done with the game so far, and I think it'll be amazing.  I'm picking out this particular trend in BioWare's characters because I think a change of pace would be refreshing.

I think Fark.com already took that when they changed their interface.  Specifically, "You'll get over it."

People did.

Mass Effect has a motto though.  "I should go."

They should definately switch from 'I should go.' to '(Kill them.)'

Uh-huh.

Well, we'll see if we can come up with something just for those with jaded sensibilities, so they can get off the couch and stop taking laudanum to dull the pain of enduring so many thousands of tropes. We will come up with something so refreshingly new that TVTropes will be forced to create a new category and somewhere, a hipster will smile.

Or not. But it's fun to think about. Image IPB

EDIT: Not that I necessarily disagree with the spirit of what you've said-- I thought we had avoided it in DA, but then someone brought up the Zevran thing like they had been watching, just waiting for it and... OMIGAWD! THERE IT IS! When the ex wasn't even really his issue. It was the fact he killed someone who didn't deserve it. Was she his lover? Sure... but so what? The insistence of some people on using reductionism to accuse us of lazy writing is ironic only because it's lazy criticism.

Works out fine for me...Hell, it would make for an interesting experience if 2 of your potential party members were exes.  The possible banter would be exquisite!

It isnt just Zevran (I diddnt really pay much attention to the romance options in the game least of all Zevran so I wouldnt know what people are talking about here) but that Bioware games do have a reputation for recycling the same old tried tropes and plot devices and repackaging them in a new game, the most common being "Hero joins super awesome group and saves the world". Even a lot of the characters are the same, for instance if you take a look at Black Whirlwind, Canderous Ordo and Wrex (and maybe even Zaeed) you will see that they are very similar almost to the point that they could be considered the same character in a different skin.
