I loved Zevran.  Even though he got friendzoned pretty hard by my Warden.
Did I do a little facepalming when I got Zev's conversation about Raina?  Yes, but only because I thought, "This again?"  And then it was back to feeling bad for poor Zev.

All things equal, I care more about a character's dialogue, voice acting, personality, development arc, etc. than I do about the specific details of their backstory.  But I do prefer diverse backstories.  When I've heard the same thing in several different games, it loses the emotional punch that it's supposed to have.

Did he try to kill you too? I've put him in the "friendzone" twice out of three playthroughs (one playthrough I was a total ass to him), and everytime he gets mad that my male human doesn't swing both ways and then tries to backstab me in the end. In my current playthrough, I just saved him time and slit his throat at the first encounter.

It makes me a bit PO'ed too, since I think he's a funny guy. But not all the gold bars, boots, and gloves in the game can stop his approval from plumeting by 20 points when I go, "No, Zevran, I'm not iterested in you because I'm not gay." So I guess that kind of makes him like Carth that he would get all worked up in a temper tantrum after everything I've done for him... But maybe that's generalizing too much.

I took a vicious sort of glee in playing a female Dalish Elf. I might have said "WHO HAS THE SAD STORY ABOUT A DEAD EX NOW, ****S?" once or twice.

Mostly I am bothered by how little space there must be left in the fridge all these mothers/wives/girlfriends/daughters are getting stuffed into.

I'll have you know there is equal space in our fridge for dead people of both genders, thank you very much.

...okay, that was weird.

That's true, after all, I was just talking about gleefully shoving Tamlen in there. Since I play mostly straight female characters, I run into more sad stories about dead women than sad stories about dead men.

I suggest you avoid "Do you stare at everyone like that?" dialog option, just like avoiding "Has anyone told you how handsome you are?" line with Alistair. That'll save you a lot of problems.

If taking rejection emotionally and personally is making one "like Carth" there's probably few people on this planet who aren't like him. In fact, note how by your own words you get "bit PO'ed" yourself for very much the same reason -- because a virtual character likes you less than 100% based on what you are.

Oddly enough, I didn't get the dead-ex vibe from Zev as he mentions it only once. However, Leliana's personal quest was a nice twist on the dead-ex trope, even if she does compare the PC to her paranoid/scitsofrenic/sociopathic ex lover later on.

Nope, Zev and I were bestest buddies.  I got his conversation about Raina by virtue of just having high influence with him.  I did flirt with him a little, so I lost influence (about 8 or so) when I picked Alistair over him, but I never lost in the realm of 20 influence ><  Don't know how that works exactly.

Something about that sentence made me laugh so hard I choked on my lunch.  It works just as well for a City Elf too.

Also, it's official now: BioWare has a fridge full of dead people.  Of both genders, apparently :D

Well, choosing someone else is in a rather different league than telling the guy "oh gays, eeeew". That said, i don't personally get the obsession with the relationship meter. People do argue with one another and often wind up as less than the bestest friends, not sure why it'd be cause for anguish if it happens in a game as well.

Well, it's a gameplay mechanical problem, actually.  The fact that mechanics (team member bonuses, not stabbing you in the back, etc.) and roleplaying are tied together in the approval meter is good and bad.  It's realistic, but it can cause problems where you don't necessarily dislike a character, you simply disagree with them, but the approval meter still takes huge hits.  They've been talking about fixing that for DA2 where you can have a "rivalry" condition with an NPC without completely shooting yourself in the foot.

Massive Dexterity might have had to do with it.

That's the Major one. Massive Dex is +6.

Due to Thane's overwhelming popularity, we decided that every romance in DA2 should have a dead former lover, spouse, fling, crush, or missed connection. In fact, each romanceable character in DA2 has more dead exes than the last!

Don't forget to add incurable disease! Or a curse that prevents the player to touch ones skin...affliction...denying even a sigle kiss :devil:and then make the npc greates ever. Oh, the horror, the horror!

And maybe, just maybe, writers for DA2 will suprise us with a persona so inconceivably and deviously evil, that will make you love her/him and stab you (the PC) in the back unexpectedly, revealing her/his true nature (rotten to the bone). Then, while you are "dying" she/he slaughters your friends that want to aid you, kills your puppy, poisons your horse, steals all valuable possession and walks away never to be seen. you - slovely bleeding out.

And then a mermaid saves you.

Ok, I've only played DA:O, DA:A and ME1, so I gotta know is that last one actually IN a bioware game? Image IPB

No, its just some grim scenario from my head, as a hyperbole I guess...

dam, cause that would totally have been incentive to go back and buy one of there older games Image IPB

As far as i can tell from the ability sheets the bonus tiers go +1, +1, +2, +2, and they simply add up.

Right, that's what I meant. +6 bonus DEX in total. Compared to zero bonus you get by speaking your mind in most instances. hehe

I think I know what I've been missing

Next time I try to pick up a girl I'll be telling her about my "dead ex" (clarification: I'd con them into thinking I had a dead ex, because I don't know no dead ex). Because apparently that tests well within focus groups.

Ahh, yeah i guess it can be seen this way Image IPB  i dunno, the game just doesn't feel balanced narrow/strict enough to cause me chase any available bonus come hell or high water, so it just wasn't much of concern to miss out on these. I mean, i didn't even put hats on most of characters because they'd look better without them, and skipped some of the Fade bonuses because didn't want the main character to develop more than the companions... and it didn't seem to have much if any impact on overall difficulty. Image IPB

(this isn't a complaint btw, it's actually refreshing to be able to pick gear, dialogue and such as i please rather than the way i'd feel i must to stand any chance)

Sounds like how my city elves never take off their wedding dresses or Dalish elves their Dalish armor throughout the game. Or that Morrigan's ring or Nelaros' wedding ring never gets unequipped.

No dead ex? Gotcha.

LI: Hey, you remind me of this girl I once fell in love with.
PC: Oh, yeah? What happened to her? She's not dead, is she?
LI: Dead?! Of course not. It just didn't work out. She was kind of high maintainance. We still hook up once in a while. You don't mind, do you?

I think we should have on LI with an absurdly large number dead lovers. When the romance starts, they can give you their appropriate cultural/racial funeral rites, and inform you that the last 30 or so died in a combination of fire and stabbing, and it'd be a good idea to keep your affairs in order, just in case.

Those characters are nothing alike. I don't know when the last time you played KotOR was, but they are nothing alike. I'm sure you can cherry-pick traits out of any number of characters and see similarities.

Also, they did bring back HK. Shale, remember?
