Hi,
I've just picked this up from my local... charity stop for £1! I thought what the hell i'll give this game a go, about 5 hours in and very impressed so far.
I have only installed Baldur's Gate and not the expansions nor BG2 yet. Should I install these now, would it add anything to the game? What is Tales of the Sword Cost? A game for once you've completed BG1?
Also, I have not patched BG yet, should I patch it? If so where can I patch it and will it impact upon my saves that i've made so far?
Regards
Richard
Just purchased Buldur's Gate 4 in 1 boxset! Need help...

Tales of the Sword Coast adds extra content to BG1. You can access this content whenever you like.
ALWAYS install patches. Never play without them. There are some serious game breaking bugs that you could encounter down the track which have the potential to completely wreck your game. However, I think the 4-in-1 set comes patched, so you don't need to worry.
Installing BG2 will not affect BG1. However, doing so allows you to use a mod called BGTutu which allows you to run the BG1 with the superior engine of BG2 (there is another called BGT but it seems to be less popular). Many other mods require Tutu so it's definitely worthwhile. See here: http://forums.gibber...?showtopic=8122 Be careful and read things properly before installing mods though.

Isn't a mod just another word for a cheat?
I'm a legit player and not so interested in that kind of thing.
Thanks anyway!

No it is not. Some of the mods make the game harder, some easier, but usually all they do is make the game more interesting. A well balanced mod will add content without making the game harder or easier.
Tutu and BGT simply put the BG2 game engine into BG1. They have been quite good at keeping the level of difficulty the same. In general, you need one of those mods installed in order to install others, however there are some mods around which don't need them. If I were you, I would play the game unmodded at first, then when you know in advance what will happen where, add a mod and you regain the unexpected. Some mods simply add conversations to make the game more realistic etc.

Depends what you call cheating. Getting a mod that increases the stacking capabilities of items doesn't really change the way you play, it just makes the game less of an inventory micromanagement chore. Getting a mod that ensure you roll maximum HP each level doesn't break the game, it just means you're not sat there reloading for a half hour. Anyway, BGtutu is really a decent option. The original BG engine is quite... slow in comparison to the updated one, plus the only thing that can make the game that much 'easier' is the improved pathfinding, which isn't a cheat in my eyes. The kits might make things easier, I guess... But let's be honest, there are moments in BG where just having a class kit won't make things much easier.

IMO a well written kit should not make the game easier, just different.
Divine remix for example does give you extra strengths, but also gives weaknesses. All kits should do that, and I think that most do. I'm no expert on them though.

I followed this example on Windows 7 (64bit) Quad CPU system last year, and had a blast!
