Not true at all. Charge sometimes does not work if you Charge from cover, but if you leave cover and THEN Charge, it works just fine.

That is exactly my point; you actually cannot play the class properly because of skill, you just do so because you know the map, enemies and their spawn points by heart.
A "fully fledged Vanguard" should be able to decide whether to charge or not without knowing the map. And here I maintain my point: don´t use charge, except for you know exactly the outcome.
Constant charging may train you aiming and covering skill in close quarters, but it is not necessary to learn the Vanguards way firsthand. It just furthers frustration for the Vanguard beginner on insanity.

Knowing the spawn points only shortens the fights. But that is the case with any class - if you aggressively advance you will face less enemies than you do if you sit behind cover all the time.

No, go for Reave, it's almost a "must-have" for Vanguards....
Oh, I forgot, is barrier a good option to pick instead of reave as a tool for learning the class?
On Insanity they'll rip your shields/barriers very fast, even with special talents (Barrier, Geth shield, Fortification). With Reave you'll have a superb attacking skill against armor and barriers plus after ripping your enemies defence layers, you'll get a decent health bonus for a couple of seconds.

Video is uploading, I am NEVER doing any vids like that again. The damned thing was done like 4 hours ago but I ran into a mess of issues with the voice over and the speeding up and slowing down of footage (I should have just done straight up cuts like normal but whatever) which in combination with my cold resulted in some iffy audio. Annotations will have to do in any future instructional videos.....

Checking it out now.... Oh, love your other vids!

Ok, just finished the vid (watched a few times...) and I really like how you broke it down to simple concepts. I was one of those people that thought you had to know the map before hand and so the class really was starting to be a pain.

I just hope I didn't come off as too much of an a-hole, I tend to do that without really meaning to. If it was any help to you at all then I'm glad I made it.

That's a great video for people who are just starting up. Knowing the maps certainly helps, no question, but I disagree that it is a requirement to playing vanguard successfully.
Taking Reave or any 3+ cooldown power on a vanguard ends up being counter-productive, IMO, because like others have pointed out it gets in the way of using Charge.

Just take Stasis as bonusskill, the bug makes it powerful as hell. Plus the fact that it keeps handy ti shutdown a Scion or Heavy Mech for a few seconds.
Doesn't it have the same CD problem as reave? I've seen a few threads where folks will explain how reave can be used to break down the defense of a group prior to using charge.

Bring squadmates that can tackle defenses, and this shouldn't be a problem. Using Charge on a defenseless foe takes it out of the fight for a few seconds, allowing you to finish off the enemy standing next to him and then get into cover before he can stand up again.

That was actually fairly helpful. I just did that mission yesterday on my first ME2 Vanguard, and it was hell, and you just outlined everything I did wrong. Which was basically everything.

Really? Man, the things you don't notice if you aren't looking for them, lol. I must have played through Mordin's recruitment some 30 odd times at least and I've never noticed you can't use mid combat medi-gel until you recruit him.

In the beginning Vangaurd can be difficult but once you get Charge up and you Vangaurd passive ability ( I chose heavy charge and champion. The reason for this is heavy charge will increase your shield by 100% and champion will reduce your re charge time more then destoryer) That way you can really charge in anywhere and charge out after about 6 seconds so its hard for you to die.
Anyway I don't like pull personally because pull in my opinion only has a benefit when there is no armor or shield up. I max out the passive ability Charge, shockwave and Reave (the optional power)
shockwave will go through any object and even if sheilds or armor is up the enemy will stumble which will allow you to get in a few good shots. When I charge in I do so with the shotgun and when the enemies shield is half way down or below I charge in and then start blasting if I cant kill them with the shotgun I start punching then I go for cover if I have to if i have life ill shoot someone else.
And reave will allow you to reagin health while draining someone elses. Then the remaining points I put on fire ammo. Hope this helps.
Last thing... Everyone has a different fighting style you have to find out what works for you what i told you is what works for me.
1. bogus, cooldown reduction does not affect charge, infact nothing does, charge remains the same, even with special armor (blood dragon).
2. try doing using a tech skill as extra (best choice is energy drain)
3. very true, every class, with the adition of the extra skill, can have a dozen ways to play, the one thing to remember is that dying is learning, your first vanguard will die often, but by the time you are playing your 5th vanguard, you can do so with your eyes closed, just gotta learn the little tricks by dying often.

What he's saying is that at that point in the game, you don't have the Emergency Shielding and Trauma Module medi-gel upgrades.
