But its not really honest, its riddled with factual errors, it doesn't acknowledge that there could be reasons for the colour palette in that section. Its actually quite unprofessional.Firky wrote...
*shrugs* I don't think it was that negative, necessarily. Just an honest appraisal.

Gaming journalism is light years behind being worthy of being called journalism. You are either an amateur doing it on your free time, on the pay by gaming companies to hype their products or an attention **** that post sensationalist reviews to grab attention.Morroian wrote...

Let's hope the TTD in this game is short.

What were the factual errors? The Archdemon reference?
My impression was that the previewer wasn't overly impressed by what he saw but that he was linking his analysis back to what the developers had said and was reserving judgement on a number of points - and letting the reader decide stuff for themselves too. He placed this impressions within the context of the RPG genre. I'm just not sure what exactly could be construed as "unproffessional".
(However, that opening battle spoiler was a little full on.)

We need more negative reviews. That'll keep the hype from building too high up and make the game fall short. If it gets some bashing on the road to knock the hype down just a bit, it'll be more pleasant to discover the game is better than advertised when it is fired up the first time.
Let's hope the TTD in this game is short.
Most of the reviews thus far have been positive and favor the changes to gameplay all while slandering origins so its pretty refreshing to see something offer more insight and a different view point.

Tell me about it. It actually looks like the land was recently destroyed and corrupted with all the dust in the air.
Indeed. It's just the one environment-- which is supposed to look like a Blight is corrupting it, not like a feast of colour for the eyes. There is lots more colour throughout the game... but, meh, you'll see all that in time, I'm sure.
I didn't say it doesn't make it look grimey, I said it seems like a cheap/cop out way of achieving the effect.
From wiki -
water sours, crops are spoiled, the land is poisoned and animals sicken. With each passing day, a blight grows. The earth itself withers and dies; the land is leeched of moisture, turning everything dry and brown. The sky fills with rolling, black clouds that block out the sun, making it easier for the darkspawn to surface. As this wasteland spreads, the corruption of the blight spreads with it, diseasing all in its path.
Why not get rid of the brown filter and use what is actually described as happening in a blight, for example corpses on the road side, decaying trees and plants, black clouds, dark lighting. Instead it just looks like you've just said "nah forget all that just slap a brown filter over the top" which just make it look like a sand storm or something and reduces the detail.

Thats exactly how I feel. Its a subjective choice to be sure, but the Blightlands in the screens look like a generic desert. I see no rolling black clouds, I see no corruption seeping out on to the surface- I see some rocks and sand with a hazy sky. Maybe they'll fancy it up a bit more later, but if no one said that was supposed to be an actual Blighted landscape I would have figured it simply to be some generic desert.

We liked Dragon Age: Origins an awful lot. Already we can tell
that it’s shaping up to be a fantastically balanced and well written
game and we don’t doubt that we’ll sink countless hours into it and that
we’ll still be playing it in years to come – just like we do with
BioWare’s other games.

Normally this is the point in the preview where we recap on the minor
flaw we think are affecting the game and say that it’s best not to worry
about them because the developer still has time to iron them out. We
can’t say that about Dragon Age though as the level of polish
here is simply astounding and there’s very little to improve on. The
only real issue is that we’re not sure we can wait until Q4 for the
final release!
Now compare that to DA2
On the whole we can’t honestly say that we were wholly impressed with Dragon Age 2,
but nor can we say we were hugely disappointed. The fact is that the
game looked much like we might have imagined it to be in our most True
Neutral and least optimistic moods; a blend of Mass Effect and Dragon Age: Origins.
It’s exciting because it does some new things, such as having a new
storytelling style that can potentially weave a touch of anarchy into
things. At the same time though, it’s marred by many of the same flaws
that plagued the first game; the excessive bloodiness, drab fiction and
endless expanses of brown textures.

I don't understand, what do they mean by brown? The landscape? Of course it's brown, they are in the Blightlands.
Exactly, the demo up to this point has always been in the same place. Judging the art direction based on one small part of the game isn't really professional.

BioWare, please stop letting hack journalists review an old demo which in and of itself is a terrible representation of the finished product.

He could acknowledge that its a very small part of the game and that its an early demo that is what 2 months old now. Also the bloodiness is not a flaw, its a subjective opinion that it was too bloody. Also given its a small part of the game how the hell can he say its drab fiction? And anyway its a bit ridiculous to criticise DAO for drab fiction then praise ME for the opposite. I like ME but its story and writing is clearly inferior.
You do have a point about the filter perhaps being used as a crutch and that there could be more detail of corruption, although I would say wait until the final game.

There's been a demo of sorts floating around for months now, given to media outlets and show and played at conventions.

Oh, we're not going to arbitrarily make tunnels out of pink granite and dye every piece of armour a rich scarlet hue just to inject colour into things.
But we do try to colour things appropriately, and sometimes, that involves other colours besides brown and grey! It's a nice day-to-day variety, especially when you're staring at the same room for 8 hours in a single day.
This is the best way I can think of explaining what I mean

Get rid of this
It just ruins the good work you've done.
What I think is bland & dull is the chracter design & modelling. I mean Hawke looks like some Taliban Trooper from Afghanistan, & the Darkspawns look like the evil queen from Snow White. I wonder if the dwarves are going to look like this in DA2.

Besides my previous comments were regrading DA:O & not DA2 anyway.
