Increasingly that seems to be less and less common in RPGs, so that was key for us to hold onto.

This justification seems incompatible with the implementation of a voiced protagonist (among other design choices in both DAO and DA2).

The context of that quote is to do with tactical combat. What has that to do with the fact that the character is voiced?

SOmething to do with how Laidlaw says that the tactical combat is being done less and less in modern RPGs so they are holding on to that but in a seperate area of the game they have moved on from the silent protagonist to a voiced one and that just burns his biscuits.

Nice interview, thanks for sharing it.

I figured we've see the Fade again--it is after all an important part of the DA mythology.

I'm interested in seeing how the rivalry system will work.

Nice interview. It was a good read.

I could have sworn that Gaider mentioned in one of the PAX chats that while we'd be going back to the Fade in DA2, it wouldn't be a major player in DA2. And yet this interview made it seem like the Fade is an important part of DA2?

Well, it is an important part of the setting.  That doesn't mean it also has to be a "major player" in the game.  The Fade was important in DA:O but looking back you only spent a small fraction of the game there (a bit more if you were a mage PC).

The justification offered was that a feature once common in RPGs is valuable simply because it is becoming less common in RPGs.

If the dev team truly found that justification compelling many other design decisions would, I think, be quite different.

Yeah, Laidlaw was being sloppy there. He actually meant something much more limp, along the lines of "Increasingly that seems to be less and less common in RPGs, so we figured we might as well hold onto it since it wasn't going to interfere too much with anything else we were planning to do."

Or maybe " Increasingly that seems to be less and less common in RPGs, and since this is one of the traditional RPG elements I really like, I made an effort to keep it."

We'll have to get used to it. Think of how many times Ray and such said "DARK SECOND ACT" for Mass Effect 2 and just be grateful DA2 isn't that far off.

Hadn't seen the rivalry stuff and that is interesting. I really don't see much to not like. Spell chains giving way to spell trees, thank goodness. Smoother combat animations - again thank you.

I think how they handle the "framed narrative" could make or break things and I'm trying to get a feel for how that plays out in terms of moving you through time. I understand the theory but the implementation I'm still very curious about.

I buy that one.  It's most likely what he was thinking, but maybe hoped he wasn't tipping his hand.

The Morrigan bit was interesting, as for a bit there the only record of "her story isn't over" was before Witch Hunt, good to know it still isn't.

Yes, it's always good to be re-affirmed on this, eventhough he has said it many times. That and the tactical combat/pause at any moment thing. :P

Nice interview, I guess the best part were the details on the rivalry system. I suppose that, depending on the potential rivals, this could be done in the Legolas/Gimli style ("I killed 456 darkspawns, Elves rulz !") or in the vampire diaries style ("I get the chick you want." Nice vamps rulz).

This sounds more interesting for me but I guess those who like to tweak their characters will be happy with the talent system metamorphosis.

Thanks for the feedback on my interview guys, it's really cool to see fans of the game responding well to it. We're all big fans of BioWare here at NowGamer so it's nice to see what you, the dedicated fans think :)

The mage finishing moves seem awesome, I think a lot of you felt the same way :D

Thanks guys!

The rivalry thing sounds good and what I take from the Morrigan question is "Well yes she will, but I can't say that." The reason Itake it that way is cause they can't be sure of making DA3 so to say we have more in store means to me is to expect her.

Thanks Dave very good questions
