Hawke's mother's maiden name is Amell, the same last name of the Human mage warden so was this just a coincidence or was it on purpose? Because if it was on purpose i am definatly making my mage my cannon Warden.
You know, you may be on to something.
True Bioware uses names (Morigan'nan - Morrigan) but that is too big to be unintentional.

No they said it was the same Amell family. I think it was Gaider in one of the PAX chats.
So yes, they are related, but we don't know how closely. They're probably some sort of distant cousins.

1) The connection is there and Hawke's mother is from the same family line (if not grossly expanded family line) as the Human Mage Warden. We already know magic is in the Hawke family line. If it's also in the Amell line, then it would make sense that Bethany (and maybe even Hawke himself/herself) is a mage.
2) "Amell" may be a very common surname throughout Ferelden like "Smith" or "Brown" or "Chang" is in our world so there could be no connection at all.

Still, I'll be carrying over a Human Noble. So there will be NONE OF THAT.

The Hawkes are commoners from Lothering. Papa Hawke was an apostate mage.

What we know about the Amells: They are a noble family from Kirkwall and magic runs pretty strongly in their family.

I don't really think it'll make much difference if Hawke was related to the Warden somehow anyway.

Yes he is. They are cousins, first cousins if my theory proves to be true. I think that hawk's mother is the wardens aunt. It makes sence seeing as Mage warden still has the last name Amell meaning he got that name from a male parent. My guess is that the male parent is Hawk's uncle on his mother's side of the family.KJandrew wrote...

I doubt, very much, that Bioware would use the same last name for no reason.SteveGarbage wrote...
I doubt it's an accident. Here's what we can infer:

If we play the odds they're related.

Though since the Amells are the noble half of Hawke's family, does that mean that the human mage Warden's former family was also noble, or at least well-off?

They are relatives. You can find out exactly how in DA2, but it's nothing earth-shattering if that's what you might be assuming.

There's small chance for that in single franchise though, given the one Steve limit. (that's for the first names but it extends to surnames, pretty much)The Hardest Thing In The World wrote...

That's a pretty cool little detail. If the rest of the game has that level of thought out detail it's gonna be awsome.

I would bet anything that Hawk and the Warden's parents are brother and sister.David Gaider wrote...

But if you import your mage will people reference the fact that Hawke's cousin his a great hero at least until Hawke becomes one himself? Or will Templars be more hostile to Hawke if it becomes common knowledge that his family is responisble for the disolving of the Tower in Fereldan?David Gaider wrote...

How would the other people even know the name of his mother?
