I wonder if it's possible to cycle through the different effects available in some program? Is there some other quick way of  going through them?

Is there any editor/tool to view the material libraries and to make working with vfx a bit easier?

Funnily enough this is something that has come up in a couple of forms in the Dragon Age Friendly Toolset Initiative (DAFTI) discussions. Perhaps you could provide some more details on the sort of thing you are looking for.

Actually yesterday was my first time with vfx, what I was trying to do was to find that effect that makes Fade blurry (which is a buffer effects after all), got a little bit lost trying to find it or reproduce it. I think I'll need to spend some time working with vfx to get a basic understanding of what can already be done, but I'll come back with some valid suggestions about what can be improved.

One thing that comes to mind can be a viewer about the effects already available in the "Palette Window", something like a DATool for vfx.

I believe that the effect to make the fade blurry is done in to the actual level. I at one time ran across the option to make a level or area with fade like blur but for the life of me I can't remember or locate it now. As for placeable fx's relating to the fade I found these in my fx spreadsheet.

fxc_fade_ghost_c Ghostly aura and wisps Crust Effect Character

fxe_fade_cloud Cloud, fog in the sky Environmental

fxe_fade_portal_p White shimmering in mid air Placed Effect Environmental

fxe_fade_wallfog_p Wispy foggy smoke from ground Placed Effect Environmental

fxe_fde_wallchip_p Masses of rocks and debris rising from high in the air Placed Effect Environmental

fxe_fde_wallfog_p Dark greenish black fog, mist Placed Effect Environmental

On the actual level, you can use Buffer Effect da_fade.

Thanks Beerfish. As Proleric said, there is also the buffer effect, but these fx will come handy for further customization of the level.
