Does anyone else feel like we are being "pushed" to play as Mage Hawke?

Based on the info that we know so far, does anyone else feel like they are gently "pushing" us to play as Mage Hawke?  Or that Mage Hawke is the "default" or "canon" Hawke?

The Hawke in the trailer and promo art is a mage.

Hawke's mother is an Amell, most likely related to the Human Mage Warden in Origins.

Hawke's father and sister are both apostate mages.

The epic Staff of Parthalan is a family heirloom, owned by a powerful mage ancestor who fought for mage freedom.

And, the concept of mage vs Templar/Chantry for freedom seems to be one of the driving plot points in the game.

Mayber the writers, including the great and wise David Gaider, could please address this.

But, it just feels like they are gently pushing us to play as Mage Hawke if we want to really feel connected to the story.

If we play as Warrior and/or Rogue Hawke, will our strong mage bloodline and ties still come into play in the story, even if Hawke isn't a mage herself?

Would playing another class like Warrior or Rogue actually open up unique plot points that are not available to Mage Hawke ( and thus encouraging us to play through the game as multiple classes )?

For example, perhaps Warrior Hawke can become a Templar, or her strong mage bloodline manifests itself in her allowing her to become a Spirit Warrior, and these will affect our story?

I just hope that one class is not going to be favored at the expense of the other classes........

No, my first 2 play throughs will be as a male mage and a female 2H warrior.

As someone who does not usually play caster classes yes I do feel nudged in that direction. I'm reassured by Mike saying he prefers rogues though, and besides I'm planning on playing all 3 classes anyway.

You could see it from a different perspective and say they force us to play a non mage since Bethany is already a mage. :)

I'll play mage though as always :)

Your sister is a mage, remember. Your family is always going to be concerned with the Templar/Chantry conflict. And there are plot opportunities that only open up if you don't play a mage.

Well, considering the possibilities, I've actually decided that my first playthrough will be as a mage. So, maybe Bioware has pushed me in a certain direction. :)

I always start out as a fighter type class so I don't mind breaking from my norm. ^_^

I hope the difference is enough for replayability.

Hawke's brother IIRC is a Warrior.

Hawke in the Destiny Trailer IIRC was actually wearing something Warrior Hawke's would wear? (sure I read that somewhere).

Most likely if the aforementioned armor thing is correct, we might be getting that as a 'unique' item too.

My first Hawke will be a Female Warrior (still debating whether 2H or Weapon + Shield, as my first Warden was female 2h warrior, so might W+S this time).

My 2nd Hawke will be a Male Rogue, kind of hoping there is an Archery tree for Rogues, so I can make him a bit like Robin Hood :P

Won't be till the 3rd playthrough where I make a Mage.

Why do you think DA2 will focus on a fight between the templars and the mages?

I do agree it seems mages play a very big role in the story and with default marketing Hawke being a mage, well.... the best comparison I can think of is the Human Noble Origin. It was sort of felt like the game's 'default' and it arguably had the most connection to the story and extra content (the Howe rivalry and ability to become a royal consort). I think Mage Hawke *might* sort of be like that, at worst. I'm sure playing the other classes will be just as fun.

That said, it does have me thinking about playing a mage first, and I'm not big on mages myself.

I plan on printing out a screenshot of Morrigan, marking her face out into three sections, and using an over the back dart-toss to determine my first playthough class...

I second this question. What about the Qunari? The trailer featured a high ranking Qunari and we have a screenshot of Hawke fighting one. I wonder when the Qunari will get involved in the story and how they affect the Chantry/Mage issue that may arise.

If Rogue leather still looks terrible, then yes, I feel nudged towards a Mage. =)

I hate to admit it but yes I have been swayed to be a mage. First when I saw the video, second when I heard that the mage would have finishing moves, 3rd when they took away my duel wielding warrior.

But the games not out so we will see if the mage is as cool as I hope it is.

Magic runs in families which explains why so many mages are in Hawkes family, also trailers build up hype for a game, Trailer should show several aspects of said game. Since Hawke uses staff as weapon in trailer represents the games combat and the magic is well...magic.

I always planned to play a mage first. So, I don't feel nudged as I'm already there. Then rogue, then warrior... I think, still not sure, could go warrior then rogue.

But are there also plot oportunities that only open up if you play  a mage?

No, we hate mages. In fact, nobody will give you quests for the entire game if you're a mage. You just watch a cinematic of Hawke crying in a corner, excluded by the cruel, cruel world.

Yes, of course there are. We wouldn't include one without the other.

Seems there are opportunities solely for mages and non-mages, which makes sense if they run counter to one another.

I had always intended to play a mage, mainly because I generally prefer spellcasters. If anything I'm happy that the first epic item we've heard about is a mage item, because I felt mages got the "shaft" in terms of interesting equipment in DA:O.
