Does anyone else feel like we are being "pushed" to play as Mage Hawke?

To be quite honest, this did really annoy me. I always play rogues as my main but it does seem like you will be the odd ball if you don't become a mage. You come from a great family line of mages and your sister gets the magics and you are just some girl/guy with a sword. It isn't going to keep me from being a rogue first but it is annoying...unless there is some secret payoff for not being a mage in a story about mages.

But your family still houses an apostate. There's a lot of story potential there even without the whole being-an-apostate yourself. Hell, considering how your father is / was an apostate that would throw more wrenches into the gear. If anything, it'll probably be similar to the City Elf Male / Female differences. They roughly lead up to the same story but just have different scenes.

But the female city elf origin was far superior.  The male version got you to the same point but it was not as personal.  As a rogue, I don't want to feel that I got to the same point that a mage would have but that the mage's progression was way cooler.

There's also Hawke's brother though... he's not a mage.

He also is not the main character.

I meant it in that you won't be " just some girl/guy with a sword" in your family, because your brother isn't a mage either if you play non-mage Hawke.

I don't see it as being pushed to play a mage. I do think that your family's history of mages will play a big part. The trailer Hawke was a mage, but I think that it was just to look more epic. With the combination of the fighting and magic it looks cooler than just fighting. Also the finishing move was there to add more coolness factor. It wouldn't have achieved the same visual factor if it was just a guy swinging a sword.

Sure, it still could have looked cool with a guy swinging a sword, but not quite as cool as two ginormous hands ripping the Qunari in half.

This is all IMO:
I found both had their own moments, female city elf was better at the lead up to the confrontation with Vaughan but the male one was (IMO) better when back home at the Alienage and your wife explains everything before leaving you. I was like... "You ****!" and cried in a corner (not really but my city elf did ;P).

But Nelaros died for you!  By the time your wife speaks to you again, you already know you are going to be a Grey Warden (and get your freedom) so it is a little blow but you have only seen her for a couple of hours and had not even a moment together.  Nelaros held the line for you.  That made me feel far more connected than leaving a wife that I could have seriously gone back to (regardless of her interpretation).  But as you said, this was of course all opinion.

If we are "being pushed" to being mage. In origins we were "being pushed" to be warrior. Since he was a human male warrior in the cinematics/ many images. Didn't make a difference to anyone in long run imo.

Except DA:O was about the blight really.  The main story was not supposed to really be about your Warden.  You might have moments like a dwarf in Orzammar but you are just a cog in the machine.  DA2 is supposed to be specifically about Hawke and her rise to power.

Patience, people. There is absolutely nothing stopping you from playing whatever class first. In fact, that would be an interesting poll: based on what information we have at this moment, what will be the first class you play as in DA2?

Same one I always play--sword and shield warrior. ;)

Only S&S warriors? Or did you mean that S&S warrior is the first class you always play?

one thing that I'm hoping they implement is that Hawke, due to her strong mage bloodline/lineage, has a strong connection to the Fade, regardless of class.

So, if Hawke is a warrior, this manifests itself in Hawke having the ability to become a Spirit Warrior.

If a rogue, then perhaps Hawke becomes.......a Shadow? Or some new spec that has rogues tapping into the Fade.

If I recall, I believe a dev said that Hawke might have special abilities not available to other characters.

I hope this means that Hawke will feel "special" regardless of class, and that it will be related to her strong mage bloodline........

I hope you are right jhawke (not necessarily those specs though) because otherwise I feel very cheated out of a plot point.

And your mom isn't a mage, either.  At least, we haven't heard that she is.

I don't feel pressured, but then I almost always play mages first whenever possible. It's a personal preference, heh.

If we're pushed into anything it's Warrior Hawke

-The Hawke in the trailer and promo art wears the Warrior Default outfit and fights like a Warrior with some mage powers

-Every screenshot is from Warrior Hawke

-In the early demos, only Warrior Hawke was available, then later Rogue (Mage Hawke is still unplayable)

But he's a Mage in the trailer, the fighting is supposedly the same ingame when fighting with a staff.

About the armor however, I have nothing. Could simply be a similar looking armor later in the game?

Nothing to say here.

From what I understand, Mage Hawke will only fight like that if enemies are very close (which isn't how he fought in the trailer), and in the trailer Hawke jumped and attacked with with his sword which is a Warrior ability (as seen in the leaked gameplay video and screen shots)

Trailer Hawke is cross class so he looks "cool"

As for the outfits:

Image IPB

Even though the quality sucks, you can clearly see the Mage's outfits is just a robe, while Warrior Hawke's outfit is the same as in the trailer/promo art

Your sister is a mage, remember. Your family is always going to be concerned with the Templar/Chantry conflict. And there are plot opportunities that only open up if you don't play a mage.

Ahh, so there is templar/Chantry conflict in DA2. So, player is forced to play apostate mage, he/she is forced to be part of this conflict too.

Since the templars are the de facto rulers of Kirkwall, that was pretty inevitable.

Mary's point was that you are a part of it whether you play a mage or not, because your sister is an apostate mage.

I hope mages have access to the warrior armor at some point. It is far more interesting than the generic robe.

No, we hate mages. In fact, nobody will give you quests for the entire game if you're a mage. You just watch a cinematic of Hawke crying in a corner, excluded by the cruel, cruel world.

Yes, of course there are. We wouldn't include one without the other.

Aw, but that sounds so... emotionally stirring... I think I'd probably cry.

Origins already pushed mages down your throat so hard it wasn't funny. The game got dumber the more mages you had to blast everything to smithereens. I happen to like melee fighting, but to have an effective party in DA:O (which I also like to have) you were forced to run as many mages as you could. If the relative class balance is as messed up as in origins, then yes, I'll feel pushed to play a Mage. Which I'd hate

I know this was in jest, but still... It's good to know I'm not alone.

Balance magic, please. I'm tired of being forced to have three of them in the party because of messed up game mechanics.

^^ This, I hated how much we needed mages for Origins, I hope we can have a party full of warriors or rogues and still manage to play through the game in medium-hard difficulty.

I wouldn't say you're Forced to have 3 mages. I generally only have 1, Wynne, for healing, and not much else. She'll throw an occasional cone of cold in a couple of the actual difficult encounters in the game, but seriously some of you are totally exaggerating when you say you need a party of all mages to effectively go through the game. It's just not so.
