My guess is her importance is decided whether or not you are a mage.



Hawke is not a mage = Bethany very/moderately important.



Hawke is a mage = Bethany dies in the first 30 minutes of gameplay, thus not very important.



The bright side and the reason it makes sense to set it up this way, is it adds a big chunk of replay value.



Carver lives and he is either A) The kind of brother who always stands beside you, or A overtly religious ****** who becomes a Templar, opposite his Apostate brother/sister.



There's plenty of story either way.

My completely baseless theory:

Bethany's fate will be a consequence of how you deal with Morrigan's personal quest.  (A "Don't you feel like caca?" maneuver.)

Bethany is only there because Bioware employees have a running bet on how many days after release a mod will be created that will allow the player to seduce their buxom sister. While house odds favor the 45 - 60 day timeframe, given some fair assumptions about how long it will take modders to get up to speed with the new toolkit and then go about creating the content, a few hardened gamblers have bets running in the 5 to 7 day timeframe, which (with 30:1 odds) promise a significant payout.

She does and then she never puts it back when she's done!

She also wakes you up by pelting you with stuffed toys. 

And goes through your room randomly without asking.

i honestly hope she will be a permanent companion for my character, would love to have a little sister in the game. Imoen's character in BG 1 annoyed me tbh, but I loved having her with me in BG2 even though i had better mages and rogues to choose for my party than her. Having your younger sister running along with you while you save(or destroy) the world is great and offers many opportunities for rp and interesting quests (and quotes).

yeah.......I hope Bethany doesn't die off in the beginning if you choose Mage Hawke.



I for one am looking forward to playing an Apostate Mage Hawke who rolls into Kirkwall with his Apostate Sister, ready to wreck havoc on the Templars and their order........



Plus, it make the ongoing struggle between mages and Templar/Chantry not just about yourself ( if you are an Apostate ), but also about protecting your family ( Bethany ).



It gives you a new layer of motivation.

I feel the same way.  Also, I don't want to miss out on Bethany when I play a mage, and I almost always play mages.  Who am I kidding with almost?  I always play mages.

Personally I really think Bethany's gonna survive. It's already been confirmed that Hawke's brother Carver dies while escaping Lothering when his head is crushed by an Ogre. I doubt they'd kill off both siblings.
