My current playthrough is as a dwarf commer rogue and I've left Leliana at camp this time (she's usually a staple with my warrior/mage builds), and it's a nice change of pace having more durable allies (Alistair, Sten, Morrigan).
Of course, it's the tank's job to hold aggro, but stuff happens, and it doesn't help that I usually have Leliana at the default 10 con, and no stealth talents.

I've gotten better with reducing deaths of my warden and allies over my playthroughs, but it does seem that Leliana is the most fragile. If she's ever hit with fireball, crushing prison, etc., she is usually in trouble moreso than my warden or warrior/mage allies.

Yeah one of the reasons I have to choose rogue for my warden (one of the many, rogue is the best class) is so I can leave Leliability back at the camp mending clothes and doing the laundry
And she keeps falling even when I have her with 18 Co and a lot of Dex.

That's because constitution only has a negligible effect on how long your characters will leave, while wasting your points on it has an extremely negative effect on that character's real combat abilities.

Well, Alistair *does* suck in the beginning. moderate mitigation, bad aggro, bad DPS. But closer to level 10-15, he actually becomes an irreplacable groupmember, be it tank, or DPS, depending on how you spec him (he can also make an excellent dual-wielder, if you choose so).
