I'd rather avoid it, otherwise it will fall into the Sand Box trap where too much is never enough.
What next... Shepard can sit in a sofa and watch TV?

It would be great if Shepard can address crews of Normandy there will be a Shore leave!! Then, there are choices of planets and different "resort", resort can be a training facility, a beach, driving jeep through jungles etc.
Life on Normandy is hard and intense, it is time for some relaxations!!

Mass Effect games are action RPGs about saving universe.
Maybe some sandbox game like GTA or RDR would be better suited to your tastes? Or maybe Dead or Alive Xtreme series?

Yet many people here want to turn ME into another GTA-like sandbox.habitat 67 wrote...
Yeah here's why that doesn't work. I hate GTA, and I refuse to play it. Isn't Dead or Alive secretly softporn? No thanks.

Another vote here for dancing and sparring.

I'd like for Shepard to be able to interact with squadmates as they move about the ship. I'd like for them to have things to say about each other, recently-completed missions, recently-visited planets/areas, major plot reveals, etc. Having stationary mission-dispensers for squadmates is not acceptable.

1) Skylian 5 Poker. Play against the crew, and two random teammates, each with a varying level of skill. Say Miranda or Thane would be good, but Jack or Grunt would be terrible.

I second this.

They can also give Shepard hints on how to utilize said weapons efficiently.

I want a holographic combat simulator that has customisable options; I want to be able to choose how heavily my team is outnumbered, how much cover there is, how aggressive the enemies are, what type of adversaries they are [i.e. will I be facing shields or barriers? Collector particle beams or krogan charges?] and I want to be able to set time limits. The biggest problem with ME2 for me was that, once the missions and assignments were done, all that I had left was mining - which I did across the entire galaxy - give me a combat simulator that I can use at any time and I will be happy for months after I have completed the main missions and assignments. A survival mode with a customisable number of waves, ranging from 3 to an infinite number of waves, would be good too.
I would also like to see specific off-duty activities that may be undertaken at the suggestion of specific squad mates, that may even form minigames if possible. I want to be able to challenge Grunt to an arm wrestle, Garrus to a test of marksmanship; I want lessons in hacking and electronic architecture from Legion or Tali; and I want to play "biotic minecraft" with Samara - at the end, Jack could storm in and ruin it for the lulz.
Okay, forget that last option. Biotic minecraft won't be implemented. ):
You understand me perfectly. Developing on the idea, I don't think Shepard could be allowed to gain experience points, as that would enable people like me [loooooong time, extremely thorough RPG players] to obsessively level grind, which is not in the spirit of ME.Vena_86 wrote...
Thats a great idea. A skirmish mode that is logicly implemented into the game world. Gives those who want more action get it when they want. Others feel good in the knowledge that "they can" if they want to.
