Have you ever been to the Menil Collection and Rothko Chapel in Houston? Definitely an artistic pilgrimage for a Rothko fan.
Who is your favorite artist?

Are photographers allowed? Nan Goldin influences my paintings/art:

good interview of Goldin here: ]http://passionisall....nan-goldin.html
Jenny Saville is an artist I inspire to paint like:

I grew up around the YBAs and was taught in their shadows, really. The movement still kinda hangs over art now, imo.

The Garden of Earthly Delights is a personal fav. I dare not post it for it contains much nudity. You can easily search it out if you desire. Also, The Last Judgment is quite awesome. Here's a sample:

Stuff I like:
Maxfield Parrish:

and

H. R. Giger:

and

And I like a pretty wide field of artists from Norman Rockwell, Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo, Chris Fossett (most of these folks I learned to appreciate from the covers of Sci-Fi and Fantasy Novels) plus the Brothers Hildebrandt, and many others. Here's one most folks don't think of too often, but I'm sure you've seen at least one of his magnificent paintings:
Chesley Bonestell:

and

And of course, there are the classic greats. You've got Manet and Monet, van Gogh (Starry Night is probably my favorite.)
Monet:

Manet:

V. van Gogh:

no, not Starry Night.
I'm also surprised no-one's yet mentioned Rembrandt:

or Picasso:
From this

To this:

And don't forget Renior.
I also like a lot of sculptors including most of those already mentioned.
And I do think photography can be art, depending on what's being portrayed and even how it's portrayed. I don't think anyone could say the work of
Ansel Adams

doesn't have artistic qualities and value.

And of course, there's the very controversial Robert Maplethorpe (sorry, no nudes.)
There's another place I find Art and that's in Architecture:
Hallgrímskirkja by Guðjón Samúelsson

Angkor Wat (unknown)

The Taj Mahal (unknown)

Casa Mila aka "La Pedrera" by Antoni Gaudi

It's kind of hard to say that ain't artistically vested when you see those.
There are so many artists and art forms out there beyond music and literature that to pick only one is more madness than having an appreciation for art throughout history and as part and parcel of mankind's creative vision.
And don't forget, there's one artiste out there that's been around longer than anyone else and we still have come to appreciate the art and artistry in it's ever changing parade:
Nature:

by Yours Truly.
And if you don't like my art then this is all I have to say:

best regards and great thread!

That painting is very reminiscent of the album cover of the Manic Street Preachers' Journal For Plague Lovers, which, as it turns out, is by the same artist. She's also done the artwork for my favourite MSP album, The Holy Bible:

I'm not the most artistically intelligent person but someone whose work I've loved since a little child, though I didn't know his name at the time was Eyvind Earle, probably best known as one of Walt Disney's nine old men. He was the largest influence on my favorite Disney film of all time directing the artistic styling, colors and background on Sleeping Beauty, which is of course highly regarded for it's artistic accomplishments and influence on future animators.
