I, like many others, don't exactly like the dark dungeon where you make your characters. So I wonder, is it possible for a mortal man to change it?

Yes. Make a copy of the char_stage area. Change the level oth99d to something you prefer (e.g. arena). Add the following case snippet to the module script:
[dascript]
         case EVENT_TYPE_MODULE_GETCHARSTAGE:
         {
           SetPartyPickerStage("my_char_stage", "partypicker");
           break;
         }
[/dascript]
where my_char_stage is the name of your area.

The same stage is used for the party picker, so that will change, too.

I've tested this in a standalone module.

For the OC, I guess you might need to change the campaign itself, rather than make an add-in. The reason is that if an add-in specifies a party picker stage, the game tries to overlay the original rather than replace it, and I'm not sure which level art takes priority.

Incidentally, since the party picker can be used in more than one location, it might spoil your immersion if it's not fairly bland.

I plan to only have 3 companions at a time. How should I place the stuff inside the area; Is it just to move the waypoint where I want the character to stand and the game looks at it as it does in the original chargen level?

I just put my waypoints in identical postions to similar OC followers, because that's bound to look right first time.

The fact that I have only three companions at a time leaves the party picker useless and will stay grayed out in my mod. So I am only using it for the character creation.

In that case, you don't need to change anything except the level. Just copy the area and leave the waypoints where they are.
