So, what will be the pretext for Shepard customisation at the beginning of ME3?

I prefer just having the character creation before anything in the story occurs with a large bonus to talent points for imported characters or a start at level 30.
I agree.

Emily Wong is interviewing David Anderson for her Commander Shepard documentary. We get to briefly control Anderson, who answers Emily's questions (this allows us to choose or change past game events and preservice history, etc). We get to choose or change Shepard's looks, when Emily asks Anderson's opinion on what picture to choose for the ad campaign (after we've finalized the facial features, a still will be taken of that and it will be Anderson's choice).
Would be a change of pace, at least... Some questions, like the Rachni issue, could be handled somewhat humorously, keeping them secret from the public (and inquisitive reporters):
- Wong "And what about the rumors that Commander Shepard is responsible for allowing cloned Rachni to escape three years ago during--"
(Choose: Shepard saved the Rachni OR Shepard killed the Queen)
- Anderson "No comment." (Saved Rachni)
OR
- Anderson "No comment." (Killed the Queen)

This. How about (briefly) breaking the 4th wall and having a character creation screen, with no explanation? I'd rather have that than another poorly-explained resurrection.
And surely people realise its canon that Shepard's face was not changed in ME2 as the universe just assumes that what you always looked like, thus theres no reason for a plot device to exist as to why Shepard's face can be edited.

I always thought about something like this. Definitely better then something cool and wtf like the beginning of ME 2.Mox Ruuga wrote...
ME3 begins one year after the end of ME2. Shepard is still "off the grid", and hasn't been seen since "the last mission you played".

Yeah, thirded. I don't need a reason to alter my face. It is altered. It's very clear in ME2 that your face was always supposed to be that way--not a single person reacts to you changing skin color or noses or something. The VS, Garrus, anyone who used to know you recognized you right off the bat. I suppose it was just a framing device for a character creation screen, similar to data corruption. This time it was just Miranda punching in information about you.

To illustrate the point of my question: in Mass Effect 2, Shepard's death and resurrection made it feasible for people new to the series to pick up ME2 and start a new character with some default decisions; this step also enabled people to customise their ME1 Shepards without loosing the decision data.
Obviously Shepard cannot die again, so what do you think will occur at the beginning of ME3 to facilitate the character creation/editing? I doubt it will be facial reconstruction, as the option to correct the facial scarring was given to Shepard in ME2 [but who wants to do that? The cybernetics are badass and 50,000 platinum? I'll upgrade my sniper rifle/shotgun thanks] - so let's get some speculation going.
Shepard is feeding his fish in the captain's cabin and slips on some spilled water, hitting his head on the floor and going into a coma. He wakes up days or weeks later and has to relearn everything.

I hate the trial idea. Especially if Shepard was reinstated as a Spectre. The Alliance would be really stupid to ****** off the Council like that.
Haven't you killed Tela Vasir, a Spectre on duty? Can you prove it weren't your goons that blew up the Baria Frontiers office she was investigating? Or, wait, they ARE your goons now!

Can we say it's Liara's goons?

You mean Dr. T'Soni, that upstart pureblood daughter of the rogue matriarch Benezia, Saren's associate? You sure know how to pick your friends, Commander Shepard.

Not everyone played LoSTB, but Tela and Baria Frontiers will probably be one of the charges if you went this played this and Bioware goes this route.
Simply working for Cerberus will probably be enough for the council to determine that you went rogue. They weren't happy that to begin with. Add some backroom bickering about the decision to reinstate you plus a crackdown on that organization, and they'll round up and do a show trial on anyone associated with them. Saving or destroying the collector base wont matter to them.

This is assuming Liara will get exposed as the SB right at the start. I doubt that's going to happen if she is to serve any purpose for the plot of ME3. SB's real identity will likely remain unknown, but the existence of such an entity will be hard to dispute (especially when Barla Von was located in the Presidium as a SB agent). Documentation about SB's involvement with Tela Vasir can help clear Shepard's name without bringing in Liara's real identity.
I don't think so. Saren used to do lots of business with the Shadow Broker before going rogue but the Council never called him in to answer for it. It is only known to the Council that the SB is a "necessary evil" that does not take sides and is thus not a threat to galactic stability. But I think showing that there was a partnership with the Collectors could make Vasir's actions not in the interest of galactic stability, clearing Shepard's name. But I think that would tread the line of having to reveal Liara as the SB.
But since we have control of the SB's information network, what's to stop us from simply blaming Vasir's death on some other entity or factor and supressing any information regarding Shepard's fight with Vasir?

Are you kidding? What about numerous eye witnesses? The Nos Astra Police, patrons at the Azure? Seems clear to me. Vasir trusted you as fellow Spectre (formerly), and you turned on her! Just like Saren on Nihlus!!!

Liara could simply provide data that Tela was working for the SB and was doing mercenary work. Completely legit data no less. If they ask you where you got it you can make something up about contacts or whatever--actually, you could even say that Liara as a information broker on Illium provided the data, and Vasir tried to kill her to cover it up, and then came after you.

Could we not just do what ME1 did, have an Alliance (or whoever, doesn't really matter) database have corruption and you need to update it. It should be assumed (just like in ME2) that you've always looked that way. This way the story can open with something cool and not have to worry about explaining away changes.
This is what I was going to post.

After a time, Shepard's body is recovered by the Blue Suns and is rebuilt, and have the possibility to change his appearance.
Oh wait...
