Will be playing single-player - mulit-player to get a custom team, so yes i am a bit of a min/max powergamer.
Given the above does a multi-class Dwarf Fighter Cleric make sense?
is XP merely split seven ways, so slightly slower for all, or is it split for the player character in which case i advance very slowly?
cheers, all advice appreciated.

The XP in a party id divided equally between all party members.
if you have 6 party members and receive 2000xp each party member receives 333xp each and if one of the members has a dual class his received xp is divided between his classes.
So your fighter/cleric would get 333 i a 6 man party and his fighter class would receive 166xp, and his cleric class 166 xp

cheers, but just to confirm; you mean "multi-class" rather than dual class?

two more question:
with multiclass, could you still (theoretically) reach level 9/10 in each class when playing TotSc?
can a fighter cleric use swords?

You can't even reach those levels with the pure classes. Under the TotSC cap, a fighter or a cleric can reach level 8; a multiclass f/c can reach the seventh level in both classes.
And no, no swords, unless you change that feature with a mod.

I think multi-classes reach a cap of both classes being one level under the level of a single class of the classes you are multi'd in... if you have a party with 3 ppl... Fighter, cleric and fighter/cleric... because BG1 only takes you to like level 7, there is that pattern... The levels of your characters would become near the end: 7, 7, 6/6. That is what makes multiclassing in BG1 very useful...
Basically all XP received gets first divided by three, and given the the 3 characters... the multi-class gets their share halved and split between the two classes.
