So, does anyone understand exactly how stealth works? What advantage does it even give you when you use it? If it turns out that stealth isn't that fun for my playstyle, I'll go with a warrior instead or something. Any ideas?

If you attack from stealth its an automatic backstab, plus its a great way to sneak around, lose aggro, etc.

Stealth would probably make you invisible to enemies during which time you can sneak up behind them for a strong backstab. Although i suppose there's probably gonna be disadvantages at lower levels of stealth.

I'd imagine there would be some puzzle-like instances as well, where stealth could be used to bypass indestructible traps and what have you.

Stealth is what Minsc would do with his two-hander.

That would raise one question... stealth in combat can be pretty useful, evading the sight of the enemies, doing backstabs, setting traps while being stealthy...

But can we use stealth to scout ahead? Like in KOTOR 2? When in stealth-mode you were seperated by your group, so they would wait for you at the exact spot where you went into stealth-mode, and could be picked up later.
Of course being stealthy to scout ahead is not really useful if your whole party is following you on your heels, being very visible...
So can the following of your partymembers be toggled on or off? Has the question been answered by the devs?

yes you can
i saw a vid where the pc rogue ran ahead and set off all the traps while the party was behind,
i did not see him use stealth though.I will assume it is possible to combien the two.

Awesome! :) Do you have by any chance a link to that video? It seems to be one  DA:O - video I haven't seen already. :)

For those who are creative with using the CC, the descriptions for the diffrent levels of Stealth can be found there. I don't remember the exact progression, but basically it starts with only being able to sneak and any use of items or abilities turns it off, then being able to sneak while using items and abilities (ie. drinking a potion, setting a trap) progressing up to being able to sneak around in combat and eventually being able to enter stealth-mode in combat at the higest level.

I love stealth gameplay so I will defo be a rogue on my first playthough. I'd like to know how they're going to include stealth elements in to the game though. I can't see it working in the same way as other games (Thief, Splinter Cell and the like) with light/dark visibility, camoflage and speed of movement but we'll have to wait and see, I hope it does have those elements in it.

I have only played a rogue and a warrior so far. I am enjoying being a rogue. Stealth has been my first ability I have enjoyed while playing in this game. If you are able to go farther than your party before they come for you then you will be able to attack without the enemy noticing your presence. I also enjoy it with having my duel weapon abilities.

You put your party on hold and scout ahead set-up/disarm traps etc. If you want uber stealth then get blood specialization from the Wardens Keep DLC.

its good when you have 3-4 points into it, you can stealth while in combat and re-open for a crit/backstab, and good for escape if you have aggro.

I'm playing a rogue on my second play through. I maxed out the stealth and it has been fun. I find that it makes the game more strategic because you are wearing light armor, and therefore cannot go toe to toe with big mobs. I am enjoying going stealth and planting traps all around them ahead of the party, then luring them through them. Sometimes you can kill a big mob with traps alone, or get their health down so low that it takes 1 hit to finish them.

One thing I like with my rogue is that if I'm in stealth mode and I'm leading out the group will go into attack mode and stop moving as soon as I detect and enemy ahead. It's like an automatic hold on the group even if I have free move selected. This happens outside the enemy's detection range so they do not attack yet. Then I continue to sneak forward and check out exacty what we are getting into and then sneak back to plan my attack. Of course I don't have any of my group set to attack on sight or this probably wouldn't work.

I sneak ahead all the time. It's a great way to check for traps or set them before the fight. On the lower levels of stealth you have to be cautious though because upper level enemies will be able to detect you.

Good point Dasim4. What is also cool is that you can stealth and check out the situation before the fight, make the right poisons, lets say magebane to take out the mage. Then backstab and quickly take them out before your tank comes and gets frozen by said mage. It makes it more tactical IMHO coupling stealth with poisons and traps. Lockpicking and pick-pocket are secondary skills to me that just let you get lots of loot. I've seen several posts with people complaining about rogues and all they are good for is lockpicking, but I think they can do much more. Stealth is key for me in my playthrough as a rogue.

There are some quests where stealth will allow you to get through them without killing anyone. If you chose rogue there are some rogue related quests where you can use stealth etc. in Denerim. At my highest level, the only thing I could not stealth in front of in battle was the high dragon and the Archdemon.

Something most people don't know is that you can also pickpocket people in stealth iirc- and soem objects you get on enemies you don't get on their corpse.

Or at least that's what i was told.

Yeah you can get double the amount as well. If you max out pickpocket you can pickpocket in battle. Lets say you pickpocket a health potion. Then you kill them, chances are there will be another potion on their body. You can get so much loot this way. I've got the highest amount of money on my playthrough as rogue than my other characters, and also earlier on in the game. You can easily buy the weapons and armor you need, as well as the books to increase you skill levels. After playing a rogue, I'm now playing a warrior, but I am using Leiliana and Zevs skills better now that I know the potential.
