Yeah, I wish more games used them like that.

It's when games become ABOUT the achievements that they start becoming garbage, not mentioning any games in particular.... *cough*Oblivion*cough*.
As for Dragon Age, they're fine. I suppose Mass Effect style rewards would be nice, but eh. At least the medals look pretty.

Well, for one thing, it can easily be used a standardized measure of relative intelligence. That is, if the subject's reaction to the achievement system ranges from neutral to positive, chances are that the individual is mentally handicapped.

That said I personally enjoy trying to 100% games I really like, but only games I really like. That's my version of beating a game now in this age of generally pretty easy games.

Many PC games have achievements now - and I am actually playing DA:O on the PC. I understand why there are achievements, I just wonder why there are points associated with them.

I do not understand the disdain that some PC gamers have for us who haven't had the capital to invest in a PC that can play current games such as DA:O. It's really offensive, you know.Mrbluray wrote...

Achievements go to Xbox360 gamerscores. If you look at the Xbox 360 gamertags who spend all their hours playing multiplayer CoD and Halo, their gamerscores are very low. Us who enjoy playing games thru such as Mass Effect, Bioshock, Oblivion, etc have much higher gamerscores. It is interesting to note on my own Friends list that my frieds with the higehst gamersores always seemed to be playing the same genre of game I was

Ah, I see... so the points are actually used by the xbox 360 gamercard thing and they just left it in for the PC version as well. So harder achievements have higher points associated with them? Not that it matters to me since I'm on the PC, I'm just curious, I guess.
If you sign on to XBoxlive.com, you may be able to get a gamercard based upon PC games you have played. Can't say for sure.
There are always about 50 achievements and 1000 gamerpoints per Xbox 360 Title (Xboxlive Arcade usually about 200gp). Most achievements are 5,10, 15 points. 25 is a lot for an achivement. I have obtained some 50 pt achievements and I have seen one as high as 100gp.
If you are curious...

Not at all. They are completely arbitrary. A lot of games will give you achievement points for basic game progression, for example, you may get one achievement for finishing a single level of a twenty-level-long game. Some games like Soul Calibur will even give you achievement points when you simply turn them on or access any of their basic game modes for the first time. And although there are games like Assassin's Creed, which may require you to spend hours and hours on mindless "exploration", finding hundreds of randomly placed flags throughout the world, in the end the only thing you'll still get is... ta-daaa... another 20 or 40 achievement points that serve no purpose whatsoever. In older days, ultra-long extra optional quests like that would at least give you some sort of an in-game item, spell or weapon. What happened with the kinds of player rewards that were actually attractive and had in-game meanings?

Some games I do try to get as many achievements or trophies as I can simply for something more to do. Some of them can be challenging and I find they can add to the fun. Others are just give aways or ridiculously monotonous. I'd love to see more games like ME come along and use them for in-game benefits. That would be lovely. I was somewhat surprised when DA:O didn't do this.
