Actually the achievment points do give some things for certain games.
The katana in Halo 3 for instance, Mass Effect, i believe you also get something in Assassin's Creed for collecting all the flags but i could be wrong.

Just think of it as an overall high score for all the games someone has played on their xbox.

I have never been on a forum with so many whining little pea brained children before.

Achievements increases replayability and also bragging right same goes for achievement points. I myself don't care much about points, but I love trying to collect all the achievements not for bragging rights. Unless it's an extremely hard or bizarre achievement.

Achievements are fun to collect for those who want to milk the game dry of everything it has to offer. I have to say Half-Life 2 Ep. 2 had the best achievement; I've seen in a game. Where you had to take a Lawn Gnome found at the very beginning of the game and place him in a rocket which appears at the end of the game.

As others pointed out, Achievement Points only measure your level of mastering with the game. They've existed for a long time on XBox, and they're useless otherwise. Though being useless and all, I'm going to get them all, it provides you extra challenge and a reason to play the game after completing and extend its life.

Achievements are there just like game difficulties are there. Why do people try to beat games on Hard or Nightmare? Because its a challenge and they enjoy overcoming it. Reaching 50,000 gamerscore is a challenge that I would enjoy overcoming. Im not too far off from that. As well, some people noted on the other reasons for Achievements. They give you goals to strive towards, and if they are done right they encourage players to to fully experience every aspect a game has to offer.

Normally I wouldnt play an evil character as it just doesnt appeal to me, but some games give me achievements for being evil. So I play an evil character, and in doing so I experience more of the content the developers included on the disc.

Dragon Age has an achievement for experiencing every different ending, which is a prime example of achievements done right. I can keep playing and keep playing, and once I see that Achievement pop up, I know that ive fully experienced everything Dragon Age has to offer me, assuming ive the rest of the Achievements as well.

Also, concerning Mass Effects in-game achievement benefits, many people disliked them, myself included. They forced bonuses on my character and all future characters, giving me an unfair advantage over how the game was balanced. I really would have liked the option to disable those, because the game was easy enough without them. With all of those unlocked the game was just boringly easy.

Shadowrun had an achievement called "Shadowrun Fever".
The only way to get it is to 'teabag' another player who already had the Achievement. (Teabagging is crouching up and down over top of a dead player's head... im sure you can figure out what the term implies)
It was essantially Virtual herpes, and one of the most clever, interesting, and funny achievements ive ever encountered.

I guess I can see why some players wouldn't like the way ME handled them. A toggle would fix that.

I agree. They should make sure every possible feature that would split the community has an associated toggle. Mostly because I hate game developers and like to suggest things that give them nightmares.

I wouldn't say that the achievements for taking all the talents/spells from one group measure your mastering of the game. For a mage it measures your ability to play the game using a shed load of useless spells. I am actually playing through as a spirit mage (I have all the spells now), and frankly it's rubbish I use 2 spirit spells (Crushing Prison and Animate Dead) in almost every fight and completely ignore almost all the rest. In hard fights I use Force Field, and against any mages (of which there are hardly any) Mana Clash, I use both Withering Bombs against large groups but only because I feel I should be using them not because they are that helpful.

Plus as a PC user I can just switch on the console and add talents/spells at will, so most achievements are totally pointless for a PC users.

If you like achievements, they add a bit of flavor and accomplishment to the game.

If you don't like achievements, they do not harm you nor your gaming experience.

Logic dictates that they are more beneficial than not, so complaining about them is completely pointless.

So yes, this is a silly thread.

I loved that the Mass Effect achievements actually gave you in game benefits. Respectable but not overpowered buffs gave you a nice little edge for taking on Insanity. Would love to see something similar here.

Usually with these viral achievements some of the Devs or other staff will play at launch and have them, spreading them out from there.

Mmm. Some might complain about these, but I found they were a fun little incentive. Certainly in an RPG it's interesting to play through differently than before, making different choices and seeing the differing reactions, but sometimes it's nice to also have a little bit of a gameplay perk added for having already beaten the game once (or twice... or more).

Especially in any game where the non dialogue gameplay is... not exactly mediocre overall, but not something I would be playing the game for in its current form. Not to mention the companion AI. Tactics offer some nice touches (other than tying a core gameplay convenience feature to using up skill slots, short of modding) for very specific AI choices, but completely fail to cover wider behavior... of which the drop down is underwhelming in terms of granularity and doesn't even always perform as expected. It's like, yay, dangle these nicely refined trigger-action choices for a select range of options, while leaving certain things that I'd love to have some form of scripting for completely out of there. That and the lack of queuing (so much fun to be snapping through characters selecting abilities/items only to realize one got stunned/etc and it never went off, nor was it cast after the character recovered) makes for a very micro-managey combat experience.

A little gameplay perk or interesting new option otherwise not necessarily even at all available on the first playthrough (as in ME's system--playing a shotgun wielding adept was a fun twist for a second time through) wouldn't fix those issues, but would be a bit of a salve when deciding whether or not the story options are worth playing through again to see, much less when considering whether the interest in the challenge of a harder mode would be worth trying, balanced against that nuisance of having to even more tightly micromanage all of the characters.

Originally I was going to buy a second copy for my own computer, rather than just play a bit logged in on my girlfriend's... choices like this have me more inclined to wait for ME2 to spend money on, and maybe to wait and see a bit on that even. Especially when having the achievements tied to my account gets me, apparently, nothing tangible in the long run, and it's sharing a legitimate copy installed on one PC... motivation to spend more money lost =(

It's nothing earth shattering, just an example of a little touch that when missing felt disappointing. They just tend to add up a bit. Hopefully some patches can fix at least some areas that feel less than polished, but it would have been nice to play a game that felt more polished from the start (loading up characters from the character creator only to have them overlaid with the default character face options and unchangeable in the game itself without resetting them was not an amusing start).

Hi everyone,

I feel pretty damn stupid right now.

I made the mistake of assuming that the Achievement Points (AP's) were a means of building up BioWare Points (BP's) whilst playing the game. So I have been busily working on building up my AP's so I could download the Soldiers Peak (Grey Wardens Keep) expansion Module. Now that I have finaly reached 580 AP's I decided to go and download the the Module which requires 570 BP's. Well as you can see I have just found out exactly how stupid I realy am.

A few major issues that I have with this AP's and BP's marketing exercise;

1) There is no information in the user manual in regards to this topic, other than to refer to the Website for further details.

2) This is the only place I have found any details in regards to this topic, there is no information in the FAQ.

3) Making your loyal customers feel realy stupid is a realy good way to allienate them.

4) When I eagerly purchased the pre-order Collectors Edition I didn't realise that there would be a points system for puchasing additional short length expansion modules.

5) It will cost me more than $10.00 (Australian Conversion) to purchase the Soldiers Peak module, which I don't think is worth even $5.00 and should be a free expansion seeing as it's part of the original campaign.

6) The whole storyline so far has been almost like watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy over again.

7) I thought that this game was being promoted as being the new Boulders gate? It's nothing like Boulders Gate, in fact its more like playing Diablo 2 or Dungeon Siege 2. The game has been so badly dumed down and Arcadised that it has lost it's RPG element. I have recently replayed both BG and BG2 and I enjoyed playing them a lot more that I have enjoyed playing Dragon age.

I guess I might be overeacting because I have just found out that this game is nothing more than a large scale marketing exercise that is purely aimed at milking the RPG Genre for as much money as it can whilst providing as little amount of content as possible. Whatever happened to providing customer satisfation?

I won't be spending another single cent on this greedy money making scam that EA has tried to rip us all off with.
