Meaning if they are alive, of course. Of all the ones I think will stick around, Tali, Garrus, Grunt, and Miranda seem the most obvious. Jacob, too. I can see Mordin staying with you, but he dies so often in the game I don't think a default Shepard will have him alive. After that, only Thane and Jack are left of romancable characters, and it makes sense if they come back too.

Sure, I know what he meant. Image IPB

But the truth is, we all know what happens to people who can die in ME. They will have a role, but that role will not be in Shepard's squad, most likely.

The Virmire Survivor is the only one I can see coming back, and I'm only 50% certain about even them. Might be the devs will want to treat every ME1 and ME2 LI equally, and relegate them all into NPC roles. The new ME3 LIs will OTOH be squaddies. Most likely the woman who'll end up posing with Sheploo on the cover (see Ash, Miri) with ME3's incarnation of the "Cool Alien Dude" (see Garrus, Thane), and the first male squaddie Shep meets in the tutorial (see Kaidan, Jacob). Possibly a few others as well from among the new squad.

What I like in ME is that it is all about choices.

I'm sure Bioware will keep that in ME3 and that we'll be able to choose our squadmates, and meet new fascinating characters.

Go Bioware ! We have faith in your talent !

We really need an official announcement of who's going to be in the third game. These threads...

No new characters in ME3. You have

-Creating all new characters
-Finding and paying the voice actors to voice said characters
-Making up an elaborate scheme to explain why your old team can't join you
-Fleshing out the old characters for their inevitible cameos
-Paying the voice actors for their cameos
-One pissed off fan base.

Versus

-Flesh out the old team members and their romances
-Pay the voice actors for the team we already know
-Pick up where we left off without any hand-waving
-A much happier fan base

If you lose characters in the suicide mission, you miss out on content. Simple, fair, and it makes sense.

As for Default Shepard, for all we know Bioware will give the new fans the ENTIRE team, and claim they made it through the suicide mission without losing anyone. And romances? Make Kelly a real romance, maybe Ken in engineering to even it out since he was originally a LI. A man and a woman, romancable by both genders for the Default Shepard without adding new teammates.

I guess I'm still a little bitter of Awakening's crappy cop-out of "Oh, I have things to over here, my love" with your romances from DAO. In ME3, there's less of an excuse--you have an entire galaxy to save. Garrus, exactly where are you going to go? Tali, you're loyal and exiled.

Truthfully, only ME does it. Morrigan was the face of DAO. Same with Bastila Shan. Wu the Lotus Blossom was on the cover with another of the main character models, but obviously she wasn't a love interest.

Just to clarify: Liara is, as of right now, the only squaddie who can't die at some point. Everyone else can die. The logic of "well, they can die so they won't be back" relegates Liara as your only squad member who can return. Have fun >< (And I do like Liara, I just think the logic is fail.)

Exactly. It's not so much the logic that bothers me as the pointlessness. Why have no one return? Such a waste of storytelling potential. This is the last game. There's no fourth game to make up for time lost. They don't need to worry about continuity. I don't care if it's on seven disks. I'd like my squad back. I don't want storytelling cop-outs.

Really?  Is there a particular reason why?

I know having one player option "seem more canon" bothers people.  The DA folks get all worked up over the supposed favor toward mages and human nobles.  Personally, I don't really care what BioWare slaps on that poster as long as I have other options too.

The default Shepard didn't do that well in ME1 so I'd say about half of the crew is dead for default ME3 Shepard too (Though it'd be nice if ME3 had the selection list PS3 version of ME2 will probably have)

I'd say the interesting question is how many new squadmates ME3 will have. I doubt Bioware would settle for a low number of 2-6 (2 is all you actually need) after what ME2 had. So will they try to top ME2 meaning we get 12+ squadmates? Or will they aim for the middle?

Because so far we have had 18 potential squadmates and making them all possible squadmates is already a huge task. I guess 7 is a nice number of new teammates to have 25 total options. That would be an epic number of options, but I don't expect Bioware to make it happen

I still stick to the idea that the transitition of squadmates should start with DLC. If I get to choose who I'm willing to let go from my ME2 team things would be much clearer, and it would be a signal from Bioware that we actually get to choose who we start with in ME3. As of now I'm really afraid Bioware decides who will stay on the sidelines and who will be in my team.

I Know That What You Did In ME 1 That Didn't get addressed In ME2 Will be in ME 3 So both games still have an effect in ME 3 and your romance in ME 1 And ME 2 will also effect ME 3 so I stayed true to My Romance partner from ME 1 let me tell you it wasn't easy

We need a new male human, a new female human and a few aliens, at least a new turian (preferably female) and quarian (preferably male). I hope the new male and female humans are bisexual or gay, and are LI options for same-sex Shepard.

I saved everyone in ME2 so I could care less about new squad mates, with the exception of Shiala maybe, but she can die in ME1 so she probably doesn't count. :P

Between 1 and 2, we have a minimum of 4 squadmates who have to be alive as of the end of ME2 - sure, Liara is the only specific one, but that is still more than enough total to theoretically make it through ME3 - there is technically no need to create any new squad members, even with the bloodiest importable ending to the suicide mission.

Also, after making ME2 almost entirely character focused, rather than plot focused, it would be a shame not to have those squad members who are alive stick around for the finale.

I'd have to agree with CheeseEnchilada on the concept of the squadmates in ME3. Bioware's already got enough characters for our Shepards to choose from. They shouldn't add any more. However, this is just my opinion. I'd like to choose the squadmate roster that would accompany you on missions (Like a mix and match of your favorites from both squads.)

It would be awesome to see the interactions between your two squads from the previous games.

This just in from Default Shepard of ME3!

Default Shepard: I'm very angry with Bioware that I have less max Squardmembers in ME3 just because I didn't play ME2! Didn't all the ME1 Squadmembers that could die only get cameo appearances in ME2 so that everyone was on equal ground? Than there's crazy blue chick who was in ME1 but wasen't officially in the oarty either. As well as the fact that everyone in ME2 could die for the import but Shepard, Joker, Edi, or 2 random squadmembers to haul Shepard up.

Dellusional Me2 Fan: I want my Squadmates back! For people that lost Squadmembers they should get less max Squadmembers in ME3 than me! LOL! Oh, and Default, aka new ME gamers, should be punished as well! ROFL! Oh, I know~! Add in new Squadmembers to replace the dead or the ones that left! Yeah, we should Bioware give them full voice acting from beginning to end along with my whole ME2 crew! Forget costs and space! ROFLOL!

couldnt say it better than myself.  Image IPB

Making the default Shepard from ME2 not suck would be a step in the right direction, although that certainly wouldn't solve the cost problems of having that many squadmates.

Imho, the simplest way to balance it for new and imported characters would be this:

- All old squadmates can be recruited, and a few new ones. You must select which of them to pick up.
- For an imported character, dead squadmates are dead (really?!) and can't be recruited.
- For a new character, there will be certain squadmates which survived (presumably the more 'important' ones).
This would be similar to how some ME1 choices were predetermined for new ME2 characters.
- Your new team will have a limited number of slots, around 8. This means you can't recruit everyone, be selective.

This way, imported characters will have a couple of extra options compared to new characters... a nice bonus, while not handicapping new players. All potential squadmates should have a considerable amount of interaction, including dialogue and potentially missions, even if you don't recruit them for your team. For the main storyline missions, you're limited to the squadmates who you have specifically recruited.

Brilliant.

I too agree. ME3 needs way more options. And make LI options people not just in the squad, but people you meet outside the Normandy.
