After having an entire evening's worth of loyalty missions and roleplaying totally ruined thanks to the god-awful, woefully thought-outl heavy ammo system in the game, I'm wondering if there's a way of influencing how much ammo you pick up per power cell crate.
I've noticed that if you're lower on ammo then pickups grant more charge/rounds, and there seems to be some inconsistency regarding how heavy ammo levels perform when a player has a certain amount of upgrades for the Heavy ammo cell. Has anyone noticed if there's a way of controlling this so you can get maximum benefit from Power Cells? Are there circumstances where a Power Cell crate grants more charge than others? Are there any cheats/commands to boost these?
Is there any way of influencing how Heavy Weapon Ammo pickups behave?

Now that you're mentioning it, I noticed the same thing; some crates provide more ammo than others.
Did you test this using quick save/load? Would be interesting to find out if ammo count remains consistent (I'm not using HW at the time (modded away); I'll do some testing tomorrow)

I know Christina mentioned that when you have Cain you only get 50% from the crates.

Someone over on the ME Wiki started a Heavy Weapons Ammo Pickup project that show how much ammo gets picked up listed by weapon/spare ammo. Basically, it says that the amount of spare ammo carried determines the amount picked up - the more spare ammo you have the less you pick up.
As for changing the amount picked up maybe you could search/ask over on the modding thread. I remember seeing something about changing SFXGame.SFXHeavyWeapon->bCanDropAmmo=false to true in the coelesed.ini causes Heavies (YMIR, Geth Prime and the like) to drop HW ammo (haven't tried it so I'm not really sure how it works).

For regular ammo, you get 7 magazines. For most weapons this is a full refill from empty, so you might as well wait until you're as low as possible to use a crate.
